I suppose the discussion about whether the current Status Quo is a tribute band or not will go on forever...for me it's Francis Rossi's Status Quo, just as it would have been Rick's Status Quo if Francis wasn't there and Rick was still there.

Nah... Thing is that Francis is the only original FF member now and that's why I call it FRQ... which is not nessecarely a bad thing cos as a matter of fact I am looking forward to the new album, from what I heard so far I will like it

People must be really digging this new video if it's spawned an 11 page discussion!

Ok another way of looking at this discussion Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in the 80's and he has been touring solo over the years now he is always classed as a solo act not a Tribute act. With all this discussion is he being a tribute act to himself then?
Because at end of the day John and Roger are out touring as solo acts not tribute bands. One can't be a tribute act and the other can't when they are touring solo in their own bands. Roger has never been classed as a tribute act nor has David Gilmour so why is JCQ any different.

Nobody's mentioned Queen yet...
What are they now? 50% of the original band who still call themselves Queen, plus session musicians who have no public face, plus Adam Lambert.
They seem to be very much paying tribute to Freddie. But are they a tribute act or are they too big to be called that?
Is Lambert paying tribute to Freddie, and May and Taylor are actually Queen or what's left of them, or what? Are May and Taylor paying tribute to Queen the band, or Freddie?
Are they sort of a hybrid tribute?
Or are they just a covers band...
Pretty boring questions!
I don't think they're releasing new material, unlike Quo.

Roger and Brian are just two musicians who still love going out and doing their stuff live. Just as Francis, JC or any other aging musician is. Keep an eye on the new release lists for a new Queen album next year

They’re merely keeping Queen music going since there’s a high demand. They even have a tribute to Freddie in the show so a tribute to an extent, although they went with Lambert deliberately as he sounds nothing like Freddie to keep it fresh in the process.

Keep an eye on the new release lists for a new Queen album next year Pretty much my take on this whole Quo/tribute act debate. If i was a musician with a pedigree like Messrs. Rossi, May and Taylor and the years of relentless touring/way of life they have behind them, i'd love to be still able to do it at 60 or 70 years old.
People's view of Francis has possibly been contaminated by Francis banging on about his love of money at every opportunity. This brings his integrity into massive doubt. He claims to be not as rich as we'd think. He also claims to be a workaholic. So is he addicted to working, money, or is there some creative joy in what he does when he performs? Or is it all about w@nking for him? Showing off. I suspect he takes immense joy in being one of the few professional entertainers who will admit to a love of money, and goes out his way to give himself that joy.
Point being, if his integrity is at stake, does he lower the band's status to closer to that of a tribute act? Can we take Quo seriously anymore? I guess that's maybe what is behind this debate.
Then he says he's not selling nostalgia. It's infuriating! I think he did an interview with Richie in Germany recently where he said there would be 5 songs from Backbone in the set next year, as opposed to the two now. So maybe they are genuinely proud of this new album, and they are a creative force to be reckoned with, and they will promote the thing by playing half of it on stage. Or will they just take the easy option and revert to the tried and tested set after night one.
Maybe we're just too old, jaded and cynical.
