I have read about Roger Waters lip syncing to a few songs. Also ZZ Top. And Ozzy.
I can't understand why they would go along with this charade.
Zep played some of their songs in a lower key to allow Plant to sing them.
If a lower key doesn't work, either stop playing the song or admit it's time to give up.
Paul Stanley of Kiss apparently can't sing anymore. There's a few videos out there of his failing vocal cords 😲

Great post, couldn't agree more, you pay to hear someone sing live, not mime or sing over a studio vocal backing *cough* David Coverdale *cough*. I'm sure we could all name more.

Coverdale's voice is now so shot that even on cd it sounds horrible. The latest purple live rehash was shocking. Such a shame, he should have quit years ago. In the eighties and part of the nineties he was a god to me.

I agree, you need to know when it's time to call it quits but I guess it's hard to admit it to yourself, specially with so much tech that can make you sound better live or recorded. I played with Bernie Marsden recently doing some Whitesnake stuff and he sounds far better than Cov live with no voice enhancing tech. I suppose heavy touring and singing hard rock is bound to have an effect in the end though, it's a lucky few who seem to get better with age. The best example for me was Joe Cocker, even suffering from lung cancer he sounded phenomenal on his final tour.

For example, what would happen if the vocal track failed mid song?
Is the microphone still on, and would the performer be expected to attempt singing?
It seems ridiculous that they still go on stage rather than admit defeat.
What keeps them going, ego, greed, fame?

madturk it's pretty unlikely for it to fail as the tech is good for those who feel the need to use it. If you look on YouTube there's a video of Meatloaf collapsing on stage on a recent tour yet you still hear him "singing" over the live band even when he's on the ground. As to why people do it, it's a mixture of all three reasons you suggest just in varying proportions.

In the case of Roger Waters, it's a weird one because he always tried to claim the moral high ground in the battle for supremacy with Gilmour.
Lip syncing undermines his credibility. Add that to Gilmour playing bass on the Floyd albums because he could do it in fewer takes than Waters could. And Wright having to tune his bass for him on stage. There's a photo showing the latter!
There's so many people in Waters' band, someone else can sing the songs he can't.
