Hi all, I am doing my annual Quo album marathon at the moment - listen to all the albums chronologically, no skipping of tracks. Some days ago I reached the mid 80s output and with that the AC album. I still remember buying it, full of excpectations, just to be bitterly disappointed. I desperately wanted to like it, but I couldn't. Still can't... What a turd of an album this is. Dreadful. It even hasn't aged well. What were they thinking? Almost no guitars - and when there are guitars, they're played by Pip Williams. I sincerely believe there's not a single solo on this played by Francis. Far too technical, too polished. It just does not sound like Francis to me at all. Listen to WGTL for example. I think I remember a quote from the AC tourbook, where FR says something accordingly. On the tracks written by Parfitt/Williams he is not playing at all IMO. He just couldn't be bothered - let Pip do it. I hate that album, does it show? Ah, now on to the album with such gems as Tommy and 1000 years: Perfect Remedy. It think I hate this one even more.... *sigh*

There's no passion from the band on that record. The only half decent track, in my opinion anyway, is this one:

Bizarrely I like Who gets the love and I know your leaving. Or at least I think I do as it’s years since I played them.

1. I respect that they tried to do something different with the new line up. The name was still there but, they tried to steer away from what Rick and Francis were known for so, I can respect that.
2. I love Don't Mind If I Do and Who Gets The Love...Rossi did play the solos on them. You can spot his phrasing and style from a million miles away. Pip played the acoustic solo thing on the alternative mix on WGTL and I think he done a slide thing on Don't Mind If I Do.
3. It has aged badly

At the time, I didn’t want anything to do with the two back stabbers. But however they had done it, they did control the name. And they tried a new Status Quo. I will take your word for the last point. Cos it ain’t going on my Death deck.

Problem is, by the late 80s, the mainstream sound was going another way.

I suppose it’s why in the mid80s I moved towards thrash metal. But mainstream rock didn’t have to sound like Status Quo did. In 1988 Guns n Roses, Thunder and the Quireboys showed that. Rossi wanted to this over produced pish. The problem was he didn’t have the voice for it and others were doing it far better than him.

What was on that album? A repetition: Track listing "Ain't Complaining" (Rick Parfitt, Pip Williams) – 4:40 Quirky, and a bit charming "Everytime I Think of You" (John Edwards, Jeff Rich, Mike Paxman) – 3:49 "One for the Money" (Rick Parfitt, Pip Williams) – 4:52 "Another Shipwreck" (Andy Bown) – 3:48 "Don't Mind If I Do" (Francis Rossi, John Edwards) – 4:41 "I Know You're Leaving" (Eric van Tijn, Jochem Fluitsma) – 4:45 "Cross That Bridge" (John David) – 3:31 "Cream of the Crop" (Francis Rossi, Bernie Frost) – 4:03 "The Loving Game" (Rick Parfitt, John Edwards, Jeff Rich) – 4:23 "Who Gets the Love?" (Pip Williams, John Goodison) – 5:33 I like it. "Burning Bridges" (Francis Rossi, Andy Bown) – 4:19 "Magic" (Francis Rossi, Bernie Frost) – 3:52 Tommy is in the same mould.....
2006 reissue bonus tracks
"That's Alright" (Francis Rossi, Bernie Frost, Rick Parfitt) – 3:29 "Lean Machine" (Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt) – 3:37 Getting somewhere "Halloween" (Rick Parfitt, Pip Williams, Francis Rossi) – 4:59 YES! "The Reason for Goodbye" (Pip Williams, Johnny Goodison, Rick Parfitt, Francis Rossi) – 3:54 "The Greatest Fighter" (Francis Rossi, Bernie Frost) – 3:57 "Running All Over the World" (John Fogerty) – 3:31 I know it was for a good cause, and at the time it was ok-ish, but... The original from the Shep Album pi¤¤es all over this.

Who Gets The Love is my favourite track off of that album... Ain't Complaining isn't too bad either but not a good album overall.
Halloween - favourite track from the b-sides/2006 Remaster

I liked Another Shipwreck but I preferred Andy's solo version. Other than that Halloween is the stand out track for me. I absolutely hated the album sleeve, stupid facial expression from Francis and what was Shirley Temple clutching a bass for?
