I bought all the remasters whenever it was they came out, don't think I listened much
Growing up, my record player was not great. The first decent system I had was a CD so I haven't listened to vinyl since
Listening to the remaster today, there were so many things I don't think I'd heard or noticed before.
Overall the album is a stunning set of songs, brilliantly delivered and with a simply fantastic sound. Quo never sounded this good again
I'd never thought about the drumming on this album, but it's brilliant throughout. John hits everything real hard, really brings things alive and gets the floor bouncing
Add a bit of speed to hash and ale, and you get the opening barnstormer. As aggressive and punkish as it got, itabw is perfect right up until the end when you are left wishing it would end like it did live.
After a bad start, mad about the boy shows it's class and is another one capable of making the floorboards shake. Yes there's signs of future poppiness, but it's hugely enjoyable and brings balance following the unrelenting and uncompromising opener
More full on Quo with the stunning ring of a change - and I couldn't get over how perfect the sound is. God, why change it?
A change of tempo is needed and we get one with the title track
Not the worlds best song but it's delivered great, and even with the albums two softies there is a thumping bass sound that is highly pleasing on the ears. So that's four unique and very enjoyable songs so far...
Rain. We watch clips of it from TOTP, live clips from you tube etc. But for me it's a long long time since this was aired loud on a quality sound system. Needless to say, it's pure class , and more enjoyable for me than the best work of the best rock and metal bands out there
Rolling Home is a simple song, perhaps the albums only one not to be particularly original. But then you have the performance, the vibe, the chemistry , Bob on harmonica and Alan's great vocal. So it became a great track.
More originality with the excellent that's a fact. Some very weird drumming timings going on, not noticed that before. As with the ending to MS, some funky and complex sounds show just how brilliant Quo were at this point
I've always disliked Easy your mind and almost skipped it
I still dislike the way it starts and the opening lyrics. But close to a minute in and swagger emerges and the chemistry lifts a poor song into an enjoyable listen.
MS. Same comments as Rain. Also the extra enjoyment of hearing the extended version rather than the inferior single edit
Overall, a top drawer set of songs that fit like a glove. Diverse and original songs, but heavy and with a production / sound that is both brilliant and timeless. I used to think OTL was he bands best sound , now I think it may be this. Guess I'll have to listen to the other remasters...
Bonus tracks
You lost the love - very enjoyable
WSOL - is this remastered too? Drums really crunchy throughout, and thumping at the start.
All though the night - great track, again with some cracking drumming
The WSOL demo is very interesting. It's obviously very Francis. Complete with violin and other nonsense added, it's awful I lasted about 45 seconds.
Blue For You. A cracking album that fully deserves its "classic Quo" fan label. I can think of no other album from 1976 that sounds as fresh and enjoyable as this one still does. I couldn't write about any album that came later with the enthusiasm I've had for writing this
