RAOTW was indeed a shocker but I assumed the the heightened keyboard sound was added to help break them onto American radio. The producers fault? After listening to the remastered release I still can't believe how they let that original tinny RAOTW shite be released to the masses back then ...especially when Quo were running red hot. An own goal. The remixed Hold you Back is Quo nirvana. Absolutely. I also love Rockers Rollin particularly at the 3:45 sec mark where the boys are firing on all cylinders with Rossi's guitar just screaming!! letsrock

Thanks to MrWaistcoat, I've finally heard this album again after too many years. Speechless at how wonderful it still is. I know we all say how good Quo are live but in the studio, in those days, boy did they rock.

I won't ever need to listen to QPQ again. That's where I bought my original copy of Hello too.

LOL...yeah, but I'm one of the few who thinks IFCSTH is a great album. And Stones is a favorite song. ANY album with 'Long Legged Linda' gets my vote. The nurse will along with your medication soon..just try to hang on 'til then.

Had another loud listen today I've noticed there's a lot of piano on there , low in the mix, but definitely there. More than any other classic Quo album? I think so. It's used to great effect on 4500x. I think I've neglected the studio 4500x, rold and Caroline over the years because of preferring live versions. Quo used keys on every single album they made. Every one. Something the keyboard haters forget. Bang on.The production and mixing are the problems.

Hello! is not a "balanced" album. An upbeat country pop song, 6 slabs of boogie-rock, and the uplifting AIBN. That's the album.
But then came "Quo" and Francis thought it "unbalanced", so we then had "OTL".
I think Hello! shows that Quo can be one-dimensional and lacking "balance" - so long as the songs and performances are top quality. I read so many fans complain that the likes of QPQ had too many similar tempos etc. I think the problem was too much filler, not too much rock.
Back to the "balance" thing....a bit weird really, as "Quo" is really quite diverse....especially when you compare it to Hello!
Hello! - the least diverse Quo album? I think this album is where the "it all sounds the same" stuff started.

Isn't Piledriver quite similar in range of music ? That has 2 ballads (not pop songs), 1 blues number, 5 boogie tracks.
Hello only has 1 ballad and a country song. But what I love about Hello is the variety in each track. Yes there are more boogie tracks but they don't all start out with a loud bang, they build to that. eg: A Reason for Living. Or Softer Ride.
So I think there is balance but within the tracks rather than a range of types of songs.
I think Quo feels more diverse because it marks the shift in songwriting partners. Francis and Rick no longer working together. And instead, plenty of Rick/Alan collaborations.

I think there's less "balance" or variety on hello than the other albums but it may well be my favourite

I think this album is where the "it all sounds the same" stuff started. There are faster tempo songs on QPQ which are more pop orientated than rock. Other than a few notable high quality exceptions, some of those are filler, whether they are pop or rock. It lacks ballads, subtle changes in pace and general dynamic. It is much less creative and mixed than ISOTFC for example. QPQ was an album I eagerly anticipated, but it flattered to deceive after just a few plays. For me anyway.
NB This post has deliberately focussed on CQ albums - they cannot be compared to the original era. Apples vs oranges
