I suppose if the purpose of the thread was to see where the line in the sand was/is. For me in terms of listening its up to '81. I was a kid and new to the band in terms of buying records in '81. So I followed the band as they were still a great live act on the '82 tour. The album was the line in the sand. 1982 at the time I thought was dreadful. I have warmed to it over the years but still it's no classic. It was the worst album I had heard up to that point released by a band I liked. But for me the line in the sand was the end of the road. They continued as Status Quo but to me they were not the real Status Quo but Rossi Quo with his side kick Rick. The pair would do anything to stay in the spot light. Their credibility shot. Light entertainers. I have heard every album and bside they have recorded. I will continue to listen to any output at least once. The only thing I've never watched is Bula Quo. So if they want to record let them do so. I guarantee it'll be ok at best but more likely poor and lacklustre. They simply can't write and record an album Id like. There is nothing to suggest they could. I'd like some of it but they haven't written 6 songs on an album I've liked since '81. Im sure to some I'm not a Status Quo fan. Probably I'm not. They are far from my favourite band today. They haven't been since well a long time. Very similar thoughts here. First "got into the Quo sound" when Down Down was released ( had lived in Kenya for nearly 4 years and just got back to the UK - so had missed the 71 to 74 stuff )... Similar thoughts on the albums - after NTL/81 it went seriously downhill - and even the very best of the 86 onwards albums struggle to match the RAOTW album for consistency, songwriting and quality - there are very few "good " songs from all of them put together to be honest - I'd struggle to find 12 songs that are worthy of 71-77 and 79-81 standard ) Saw Quo live from '79. The 79, 81. 82, 84 tours were great ( with Pete they had lost the JC "swagger" but the "it" factor was still there ). After '86 the live Quo "swagger" and the "it" factor had effectively gone - it was a hurried/hasty jukebox of a live show. The Quo identity of the cheeky chappies + 3 others just flushed their credibility away for the most part. The 2013/14 FF reunions re-lit the spark of the "swagger" and the "It" factor......but after that it was gone again. Francis, Rick and their 2 Telecaster contrived marketing icon identity just clung on to the idea that it could still be a "form" of Status Quo, however weak that turned out to be. Now that Rick has gone any shred of credibility and true connection to the true legacy of "Status Quo" has effectively died with him.

There are plenty of people who have never been SQ fans who could probably objectively review any future new developments on their own merits. Harder to do from 'lapsed' fans with inherent past biases, but if acceptance can be arrived at that what's gone is gone, then in my opinion its not impossible
If, hypothetically (and as unlikely as it might seem) they were to suddenly come up with a heavy blues album (or any type of genre for that matter), then as I suggested above, as far as I am concerned I would respond to it for what it is, no longer based on what was. Or even based on the name SQ as a representation of the past. At some point the past has to be left in the past. But this is an individual prerogative obviously.

After watching the YouTube clip of that band Raid with Ritchie belting out Big Fatty then I can see CQ moving forward as long as Francis lets Ritchie off his leash along with some set list changes that would suit Ritchie. It's been shown time and again that the general public are the money stream of bands that were a success and importantly it's THE MUSIC which is more important than the band members as long as there's some bloodline. I'm of the opinion that Status Quo could continue on without Francis as long as a strong frontman can be found, after all it appears Ritchie has been accepted for Rick who I believe was irreplaceable ... he puts in and I reckon he can deliver a whole lot more if given the chance. Agree completely with all this.

Absolutely spot on post, I think it's onnly Francis's control freak tendencies and love of the limelight that have so far prevented him from really letting Richie show what he's capable of and I do detect a certain opening up and looking to the future in Francis. I was hugely impressed when I saw Richie play live a couple of times last year, for me it was clear he understood the Quo sound and especially the Rick sound in a way Freddie Edwards never did, just as his father never understood the Alan sound. Last year however with Francis imposing himself with Rick out of the way he had Richie ridiculously low in the live mix, having seen a couple of recent live gigs in Germany I immediately noticed that Richie is much higher in the live mix now, almost approaching Rick's level and the live sound is all the better for it, some genuine hard rocking rhythm helps cover up the light and tinny lead sound from Francis's ghastly new guitar. So yes, I hope the next step is Richie singing live vocals, bring back some lesser heard Rick songs into the set and let him sing them and let Rhino once again prove that silence is golden.

Great song and great performance just a shame about the video quality, but what is clear is that Richie can really rock it and work a crowd so I just hope Francis slackens the reins enough and lets him rip live. Absolutely loved the heads down and rocking guitar break, if only Francis would go for something like that now, I can really imagine Richie doing Roadhouse Blues with jig or even better a full version of Forty Five Hundred Times.

I can't believe that Francis isn't aware of the possibilities, or more to the point will have dismissed them. Its obvious that Ritchie is finding his feet, irrespective of negative comments I myself have given of the overall band at gigs both before and since Rick has gone and it should be obvious to Francis and the rest of the band that this process should continue (and accelerate). Especially because Rick endorsed Ritchie while he was still alive.
One of the reasons I was negative about the Wacken interview with Francis was that with Ritchie and Leon present at the time, no greater participation was given to the younger members beyond the ebbing and flowing of Francis' familiar utterings. It was an opportunity for Francis to provide some evidence that he openly wants to develop Ritchie's role and therefore even let the guy himself talk about more about his role within Quo and what he might be looking to input to the band.
Whilst you wouldn't expect any of them to go as far as talking about future set changes necessarily, some kind of suggestion could have provided that the post Rick band was looking for progression, and not simply treading water ad nauseam into some highly inward looking and extremely underwhelming route to retirement
I'm counting on Francis erratic and contrary nature to work the other way, and suddenly produce something forward looking rather than repetition of the same old and indication of more of the same old to come. Some reverse psychology maybe. Time will tell.

I think if they are to try something new. They should try a country rock album. I'm not a big country fan at all and I know there are many styles. But something akin to Claudie or Dirty Water would be interesting. I can't imaginine them playing rebel country or zither man in black. Maybe they could use the ladies they have used on Aquostic.

[r]Ynfortunately I don't believe Ritchie will be let loose as he should. Reflecting on Quo interviews I can't recall (very long time)Andy or Rhino giving input into Quos direction. A shame as I'd defo go see them in Sydney this October if I knew setlist changes and Ritchie off the leash were hitting Sydneys Hordern Pavilion instead of of Quo mash potato.

I like country rock music- anything from Sheryl Crow to Eagles to LS and others. So on the basis of Francis appreciation for country music, if he/they were to try it, it would have to much more than watered down entertainment hall MT type of thing and more the Claudie and DW type of thing. In other words do it properly, even is it isn't exactly zither man in black!

Maybe they could use the ladies they have used on Aquostic. For what? Making some sandwiches? Certainly won't be for singing.
