While there is a clear opinion on here that CQ, including with Rick around, didn't manage hardly any decent songs in any broken down component of 10,20 and 30 yrs there are some, myself included, who don't see it that way. Its not the popular opinion, but it is one nonetheless
I think if I was also totally unimpressed, I too might be inclined to have less faith or interest in what the current (post Rick) band might be capable of. Though that said, dismissing people (e.g Ritchie) before they have even had the chance to prove otherwise can be short sighted - especially if it might mean a catalyst to something quite different to Quo legacy, which invites the usual negative comparisons. These negative comparisons can get as repetitive as the music played itself - imo anyway
Owning your own songs can make a difference between going through the motions and appearing bland and soulless when copying what another version of the band did on the one hand, and presenting a vibe that shows some extra stimulus to improve its appeal because you had an actual part in its creation on the other. CQ created an open goal for years and years by not owning their own product even after going to the trouble of recording it. This being much of the basis of my own frustration and disillusionment. I could sure live with them not being at the same amazing level as the FF, based on the fact that I still liked enough of the catalogue to stay interested, but got fed up with them lowering their sights as an imitation band of the 70's - especially after the reunions exposed that short coming far too acutely to be comfortable with.
Its a case of trying to think beyond these negatives though. My own negative perceptions. I can't exist posting on topics any longer about the band that dwell on those negatives. It isn't fun as a voluntary pastime, and with Rick gone, it feels especially negatively depressing. He can't come back, the FF can't come back Its very sad, but he and they have all gone. Comparisons with the FF won't make them or any of the golden years come back.
But the likes of Richie are no part of that and his and Leon's existence in the line-up is not at fault of what many consider wrong with the current state of Quo. Watching them going through the motions of Quo copyright seems a waste of space, but it doesn't make them a waste of space. I'd still rather pitch some faith in some new possibilities if the band decided to turn a page. I feel as long as the LNOTE etc persists the negatives and the comparisons persist. Like it or not, things are moving on and what is gone is gone. Its either look at new possibilities, give up posting, and/or simply live on old nostalgia and the best parts of what has been. Take your pick.

corrected that for ya. Do you lot only study one mathematic then? There are four others you know. Yes I know. Math is preferred in USA and Canada.

Yes I know. Math is preferred in USA and Canada. I was just joshin'. I thought we Brits and you Canadians spelt stuff the same way... Are there any other notable differences? We do. I know of another. Organization is preferred in Canada/USA, whereas organisation is preferred outside North America.

I long ago divided the band into 3, now 4, parts. Quo1 was the FF, nothing has come close to them. Quo2 was 81-85. Adrift, still with good moments but overall out of sync. Quo3 86-Rick's death. Those are three distinct and different bands with the same name.
I like a lot of Quo3's stuff, I do. It's upbeat, the melodies are good, the songs are usually well sung. On average I like 35-50% of each album. The difference is that when they're bad, they're really bad. Quo1 had few truly bad songs. But Quo1 was a different band.
Quo4...oh my God, they're terrible. Having Rhino sing Rick's songs should be illegal.

Set 1 Set 2 Set 3

OTRNR Burning Bridges Twenty Wild Horses Carol Anniversary Waltz Let's Work Together BBJ BBJ BBJ
3 different setlists there, each entirely feasible given the band's arguments on flow, light and shade, etc.
All songs have been played before and are proven to work live.
Caroline and the other hits stay where they are.
There really is no excuse why something like this could not be attempted.

I think the very worst thing are doing at the moment is the song rain. A key lower and Rhino singing it, it sounds SHITE!! You don't give a classic like rain that kind of treatment, i mean WTF?? Yes they maybe could create some good stuff of their own, there's enough talent to do that. Can't see it happening though, Rossi is too old and too comfortable to try it, and the "real quo" legacy is too strong for him to break away from.

Obviously we all like different songs, and there are some listed I would prefer not to see - but overall there are plenty of good songs amongst each of those sets. Especially with some new material added in as well, it would up my interest.
Whichever arrangement, no reason at all why it couldn't happen

The fact that songs in the set are incompatible with vocals is yet another compelling reason for overhaul and fresh blood newly written which can be tailored naturally to age and other limitations that have developed with time.

One of the latest lame excuses given by 'The Defenders Of Everything', is that the band are "keeping Rick's songs alive".
NO NO NO NO NO!!! They certainly are not keeping Rain alive. In fact they are completely butchering, murdering & crucifying it. It's an insult of gargantuan proportions.
Its not Rhino's fault. If he can't sing it then fair enough, even when lowered by 2 semitones. But in that case than FFS drop the song, because it sounds shite now.
There is absolutely no need at all for Rain to be in the set anymore. The casuals who make up the majority of the crowd wont even know if it's not there. As long as they hear WYW, RAOTW, & maybe Down Down & Army, they're happy.
Rain should not be in the set now.

Thing is from what I have heard from him Richie can sing, well hes deffinately better than Rhino. There's no video of him singing Rain with his old band on YT. There is this poor quality version of BFM and a cover of Superstition, he does not make a bad job of either.

As per the gist of the OP, I would like to see what Ritchie could properly offer to the band via some newly written experience. He is well grounded with enough gigs behind him to slip in to the writing and contributing fold and hence also be a much needed step to closing the comparison chapter with Rick. Rick cannot be replaced in SQ, most all agree with this. But there is no reason why Ritchie cannot be a good replacement for a new forward looking band.
One or two posts from elsewhere seem to also think there is some chance that this may become a possibility with tentative soundings that Francis might be looking to relaxing the grip on the set. Been here many times before only for it to amount to trivial window dressing with one or long standing choices only being replaced by one or two other predictably over used ones. But the law of diminishing returns means there is greater pressure to do something this time.
This isn't even CQ anymore.

Maybe they should drop Rain & put BFM back in with Richie on vocals, the clip sounds great, imo.

Richie way above Rhino in the rock voice dept. Geez, no wonder Rick gave him the big tick of approval.
