On youtube, wrongly titled as the Crystal Palace gig. Crap sound quality but what struck me was how much of the bits that weren't on the vhs videos that i don't remember from when i was at that great gig as a 16 year old lad. Interesting to hear the Rossi banter between some of the songs that almost all of was edited out for the videos. Loved the bit just before they go into bye bye johnny, that helicopter type sound, "tuning up" noises from the guitars (rehearsed of course). Rossi almost sounded a bit pink floyd in that bit (almost!) But no, i'd forgotten loads of bits from the actual gig, like the fact that after they finished bye bye johnny and it was time to go home, they actually came back on and did the end bit of the song again!! Great stuff, was almost as if they couldn't quite believe and didn't want it to be over just like us fans. Also great to hear the uncut 4500 times and roadhouse blues from that gig, along with paper plane, dont drive my car and little lady. Rossi did fuck up playing wise a couple of times during little lady but it still shouldve been on the video imho. Anyway, was a good listen for dare i say it, a bit of nostalgia

Was also evident how much the vocals on some of the tracks had been "cleaned up" for the video, especially on roll over lay down.

That crap bootleg is down to a certain someone (Rockin' Nerd), uploading in awful quality Rossi fucks up a lot throughout the gig, especially during Hold You Back... as does Rick. But the one song that doesn't have a single fault in is Forty Five Hundred Times, I don't think a single bit of that was overdubbed at all. One thing that irritates me is they took the "Come on ay" that rossi says during WYW and put it at the beginning of Don't Waste My Time... I'll never understand why they took a lot of Rossi's banter out! or did an awful editing job, for example before Backwater when he calls the crowd a "cocky lot of sods" and you can hear him go into saying "We're going to enjoy ourselves tonight, aren't we?" before it cuts to crowd audio. IMO there was no need for 3 releases with all the same shite spread across them when there were still 4 tracks cut and massive chunks of songs removed. MFTR could have easily had started with Paper Plane instead of Roll Over Lay Down. Both tapes ran for 1 hour in length, but I'm sure back then tapes were capable of doing much longer lengths of time

Who cares about a few mistakes when gigs cook like these. I'd trade an ounce of 'polish' for a pound of mistakes based on remembering the experiences of the hey-day
Pete was great at these gigs - bearing in mind he had the very hard job of following John. He seemed elevated and inspired by the live experiences he had with Quo and whilst its all what-ifs and maybes, I sometimes wonder whether Matt Letley might have kept interest longer if he had the same raw excitement and spontaneity at his disposal that Pete had.

Although I enjoyed the gig, and they played their hearts out.. I don't know
I can't listen to it now, even though I bought and played both tapes many times inthe 80s. and I dont know why can't go near them now(maybe the Rossi factor?).
Maybe deep down, we could feel somethin bad was coming round the corner.. A lot my mates who went with us felt the same.
Although Pete K. did a top job, I dearly wish spud could have played at that gig, he truly deserved it.

Sure but hey never really had an image, Rossi was all about image, stick thin, waist coat and principally the hair. It was going right through the 70's but somehow he kept enough to be able not to detract from his stage image up to 1982. By 83 however the game was up, and I'm sure that influenced his attitude.

Without question and I've always thought it too. I'm balding. Many others are. It's just a fact of life sadly. I was watching the Marquee footage from 72 the other day and even in that, you can clearly see it was already going. How he held onto it for that long is genuinely nothing short of amazing

By some chance I now can't remember, I met Francis around that time, and said how glad I was to have a video with 4500 Times. He said yes but they had cut it about a bit, the recording didn't show the whole song in the right order. "All the little choruses" were the words he used, that stuck in my mind, he knows it really well and when he hears it he knows it isn't quite right. I don't know if this is the case or not, it's just what he said. This was about the guitars of course not the vocal track.

Just giving the bits that were cut a little listen and I can't hear many faults if any at all tbh... Hold You Back is awful for them though, mainly during the jig/bouncy sections. You can see on the video a bit where Rick messes up by barring the wrong fret and quickly moves up... You can't fault them for it at all though, as it's not uncommon for bands to fuck up live. Have to say I hate who ever did the art for the VHS tapes teasing us with a picture of Rick singing Rain on the cover for MFTR and on the back of the Preserved release was a shot of Rick during Little Lady... depending on the version you had. I can't quite find the picture now but I'll hunt it down
What a waste of a release I have to say though! 30 minutes of songs we had seen on two other tapes. The actual running order was; Whatever You Want Hold You Back Rockin' All Over Don't Waste My Time What You're Proposin' Down Down

I agree totally that a few mistakes playing wise is ok with a rock band like quo used to be. It added to the character of what the band was and never used to bother me in the slightest, especially that day/night at Milton Keynes bowl. It was such a great party atmosphere all day, i got pissed and fell asleep laying on the grass for about an hour before quo came on, and woke up to the "drone" and people cheering. Would love to have a DVD of the ABSOLUTE full show, with all the inane (at times) banter and all the fuck-ups, warts and all. Sadly that's never gonna happen if it's true about the tapes being lost in a fire or something.
