As ghb says, the version on Hello! sounds the same as the Paper Plane b-side which was released about a month before Piledriver. However, it's possible that Softer Ride was recorded to be the b-side & it was already too late to add it to the running order for the album. aye. It begs the question why did they feel the need to put SR on Hello! ? Did they not have enough musical ideas for that album? After all, Lonely Night didn't make it onto OTL... Maybe they just decided Softer Ride deserved greater exposure than being buried on a b-side, although I'd argue the same could be said for Lonely Night & All Through The Night. If they wanted to fill up Hello! they could have just had a longer version of 4500X - better than the Nanana "extractions" used to fill up Dog Of Two Head, which was clearly a song short.

They must have a soft spot for SR having done it live in the mid-90's (first time?), late 00's and even with the current line-up.

Aye, I'd have been well pleased if they'd included it in the set for one of the reunion tours.
