I think the drumming is amazing throughout the Quo album. The obvious ones to pick out are JTM and ST.

The standout for me is on Slowtrain but I really like the interaction between John and Alan towards the end of Can't Give You More on the John Eden remix of RAOTW.

Quo used to do great fade outs, usually featuring great drumming. One of my favourite examples is the album version of Living On An Island - it might be a mellow acoustic-ish number but John is clearly reminding everybody on the fade out that Quo are supposed to be a ROCK band.

Anything from Quo or On the Level. Some highlights after that, but those are amazing. He made own melodies on the drums.

I'll throw in one that might get things thrown back at me, but I think JC was magnificent. Almost the whole of IYCSTH. But for elevating a good song to something much better, he was really hammering it on Teach You To Love Me.

Yeah some great stuff on Quo, Shy Fly always stands out to me too from Ma Kelly and also in terms of a nice loud clear drum sound, anyone think The Wild Ones?

Does anyone know what Spud actually liked best? Everything from Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon

Big Fat Mama - tons of dynamics and tons of great rhythms - and most particularly for the way he keeps the high hat in shuffle when the band are flat out in straight 4/4. That was why IMO he could not be truly replaced by any other Quo drummer. I know very little about drumming, but I only know of Charlie Watts that can do it similarly. Coghlan reckons Mick Fleetwood can shuffle

John's drumming on RING OF A CHANGE has always impressed me. Great feel on That's A Fact. Nightride is one of my fave rock songs of all time, for many reasons, great drumming is one of them. It really moves me Don't tell Francis but I feel it's one of his best vocal deliveries. As on quite a lot of QUO tracks he throws in great fill variations near the end of songs normally as they fade. He does it on another fave of mine I Saw The Light. Somebody mentioned Living On An Island in an earlier Post, couldn't agree more. There are 1/2 a dozen different fill variances as this great song fades out. This would've gone top 10 in Australia with airplay support. His drumming on the LIVE 77 album is outstanding. Ironically, his drumming on Never Too Late was brilliant and varied and versatile. I could go on highlighting this song or that album, let's face reality and the truth, John Coghlan is one of the best Rock drummers to walk the planet. This is accentuated when you here fills, rolls and cymbal crashes that other QUO drummers have ommitted. Long live John Coghlan!!!!!

Obviously John is the bees knees etc but, I have to give a mention to Matt's drumming on Movin' On.
Nothing spectacular as such but, it gets the head and heart going

Perhaps he could have been higher in the mix throughout, then I wouldn't have to hear that utter drivel.

Jeff Rich could have been a better Quo drummer if he hadn't been so damn tense. I always thought he looked and sounded like he had far too much energy, and it just made Quo's music sound a little bit uptight and undynamic compared to JC and to quite an extent Pete too. Rock n roll's supposed to be played loose, maaaaaaan.
And Jeff did play some cool fills and had quite a lot of busy bits and nuances to his playing that were really hampered by the awful 80's/90's production. So synthetic, unfortunately.
Mike Paxman's production later on was a bit earthier, but made the band sound like they were playing inside a wet cardboard box. And Matt lacked any really groovy fills with Quo. Leon to me is a kind of sterile mix of Jeff and Matt.
Coghlan's machine gun fills are totally unique and were one of the first things i admired about Quo as a wee lad. It's a shame he can't do them anymore.

Apparently, although John's left handed he drums right handed, which probably has a big impact on his style & sound.
