Sounds like tafkar to me..... I'm sure you're aware that they mime on TOTPs. And looking at how that's filmed, you don't see his fingers on the solo. And I don't think it sounds like him either. On another point - that's the first time I've seen that clip and I don't recognise it as Quo at all. Yes, a professional rock band with Rick and Francis. And its not simply the look but the track also. Makes it clear why I forgot about them until HT.

Yeah, I mean, he actually mimes the sound of the car engine revving on his guitar, so anything's possible I suppose.
On the subject of his pennyloafers, white socks & jeans, wasn't he going out with some model at the time? Paige somebody? She probably put the big bow in his ponytail too, and dressed him in an expensive suit jacket.

Yes, Rhino may be a nice bloke n all, but it's still 'lol' stuff seeing him chicken necking and busting to do his twirly whirl spinarounds ...I guess a spinoff from his previous bands. I reckon Rossi, once 'toughie' Alan had been exited stage left, wanted to slip into the mainstream music genre of the times... New Romantic, with the nice poppy feel and big shoulder pads!!

It's nothing Francis couldn't play, but since he got Pip to do solos on recordings he should have been doing himself, it serves him right if the best bits get attributed to someone else! Also he dissed Dave Edmunds afterwards for sounding too 60s, or something. Not that I'm a mad fan of Dave's, but if you don't want the Dave Edmunds sound, why hire Dave Edmunds? (RS and the one about sand are the best two tracks amyway.) I agree.
Actually though I like Dave Edmunds stripped back retro sound. They could have done worse than hire him - especially as that 80's phase in Quo's career was one of the most synthetic. Adopting a more retro feel to it would have nicely offset all that.

Interested to know what people think is retro about it? To me it just sounds like a rock band from the 80's.

Red Sky has often been compared to Eliminator era ZZ Top, I can see some similarities.

I'd also forgotten what a great solo it is. Cheapened a bit by realizing it likely ain't even Francis!

Some parts sound "vintage Rossi" and have his phrasing and style. It's the ending of it that puts doubt in my mind. It's not like Invitation or Everytime I Think Of You, where we all know it was Pip

ZZ Top adopted 80's style production to their sound much like Quo.
In my opinion though ZZ Top still retained more of their original identity than Quo who went further into the typical "synthetic-ness" that was all around the genres of the time

Ironically, there is no drummer or bass player at all on Eliminator and Afterburner. Quo never went THAT far, but then again they didn't seem to have the same kind of vision whereas ZZ Top knew exactly what they wanted to achieve.

It has a fatter sound than the Pip productions from the LP though, and that makes it a bit less dated.
