"The unexpected loss of another childhood icon, Rick Parfitt, on Christmas Eve of all days only served to amplify my misery. I would never claim a genuine friendship with Rick but over the decades we developed an enjoyable and (from my end, at least) priceless professional relationship. Parfitt often picked up the receiver and sang Chuck Berry's 'My Ding-A-Ling' when he knew that I would be calling for an interview. We had last spoken exactly two months before his passing and during our conversation he guffawed: "It'll take more than death to kill me" – in fact, he said it twice. Tantalisingly, I had Skyped with Alan Lancaster mere hours before Rick passed and the bassist had confirmed that the much-discussed project PLC (Parfitt-Lancaster-Coghlan) was no mere figment of anyone's imagination. Plans had been forging ahead: four songs were in a recordable state, a producer (John Eden) lined up and a possible studio location discussed. Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking.
My immediate response to the news was to head to my office and crank up the 'Quo' album at offensively loud volume, knowing that it was one of Rick's all-time favourites. In an interview he gave me for the recent re-issue, his pride over its contents was unmistakable. "When we wrote that one, it sounded so, so heavy," he beamed of the track 'Drifting Away'. "That rhythm was constant, right in your face; it was just such a turn-on. That's where my head was at back then, you know, 'Just let it fucking rock'." And that's how I will always remember Ricky P."
Apparently he also will write about Rick for a swedish mag, I'll keep a lookout.

It seems they were making all the right choices, but they left it a bit late. So sad. RIP Rick.

Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks. Like we're not missing him enough already, we go and read that.

Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks. Like we're not missing him enough already, we go and read that. Exactly my reaction too when I read of the confirmation about the new songs. So sad for him and for us But at least it also confirms that he was up-beat and positive with his future plans..... Not much consolation but something to cling on to.

Hi All, Just gut retching to think of what may have been with PLC, especially when you consider that Rick was really attempting to get back to what he really wanted to do all through the years since Quo's comeback and the poprock route Francis decided to take the band down.... quorp

Its another tough and very sad read but its also very uplifting at the same time - Rick will be in big approval and appreciation of that testimonial to him up there resting on his little cloud quorp

It is a real shame... He was really interested in doing his own thing and working with John and Alan as well... but he was sadly taken before he could properly take these projects off the ground

It is very sad this project did not come to fruition. It would have been great to hear PLC record some new material... i have always wondered how much of the Quo sound is Rossi and how much is PLC (I changed my view towards the latter on the FF reunion tour).
I do find some comfort with these tracks and the proposed autobiography that Rick was "looking forward" when he passed away. It would not have been nice to have thought with the move towards "Aquostic" that he had nothing left going forward.

Jeez....So incredibly sad for poor Rick...he really appeared to have so much in the pipeline, its so goddam frustrating.
We will never really know just how far the PLC project would have gone but I do find it comforting to know that Rick seemed to be in a much happier place musically towards the end of his life, and appeared to have broken free of the Rossi influence after so many years. That's what's counts all said and done.
I wonder if the 4 songs that Dave Ling refers to included the 2 that Rick had already put guitar parts down for...maybe it's possible for Alan and John to salvage something from the others...? Maybe I'm just hoping in desperation... 🙏

Something that rings out from this is how excited Alan must have been. He knows there can't be "another Quo", but it could be spiritually, at least, a new start, a resurrection, for the three of them. But it is not to be. But I think they will rescue something from it - Rick has after all laid down two tracks, which is two more tracks than he has done outside Quo for a very long time. Something will emerge, maybe something that will surprise us. Something is ending here, not just ending for now, ending finally, and when things end, new things have been known to awake.
PS I went to listen to Drifting Away again just because I must, and i was about to go do something else when Mystery Song came on ... not going anywhere right now!

It does make me feel especially sad for John & Alan, the timing of Rick's death is most cruel for all three of them.
