He does, but he fingerpicks as well. He must have been fingerpicking whenever i looked at him then. But i was looking at rick more to be honest as i wanted a plecrum from him!

Rossi has always had a very unusual right hand style. He flexes his wrist backwards and can strum leisurely right across the strings while only hitting the strings he wants to. Yes he uses a plec. That sounds like a very useful technique. Which way is "backwards" in this description? (When I was a beginning guitarist, I was of course always busy watching people's left hands. I've now forgotten nearly everything I learned, except this: it's quite difficult to tell what a guitarist is up to by watching his hands, particularly the right hand. So I learned something )

Ah well now I shall always be looking for that in the future. It took me a while to catch on that rhythm and lead/rhythm guitarists may look as if they are hitting everything at random, but in reality they know exactly which strings they are sounding, and how to make sure they do it. Discovering that the "Smoke on the Water" riff is only two strings. A friend of mine who was really quite good tried to teach me that as a barre chord.

A plectrum is useful to safeguard against nails breaking! Practical considerations come before technique

Somewhere in my buried piles of VHS clips I have around 3 lots of Richie playing this - one of them you can hear the ripple he plays here, I've always wondered how he did that. The other two versions seem to be ripple-free, and each is a little bit different, the way he plays it, and still the same riff. It's a two-finger power chord, the effect similar to that in Money for Nothing. Now, has anyone got a guide to the Big Chord in Juke Box Hero?
