Released today on Spectrum / Universal. Seemingly compiled at random, it's a real ragbag of tracks including a few oddities! Amazon UK doesn't have a tracklisting on their CD listing, but the MP3 listing (assuming it's correct) has the full breakdown of tracks:

Definitely on CD - Amazon have it and there are eBay sellers listing it too. It's part of a range I've seen for sale in Tesco (others include 10cc and UB40).

Am I right in thinking neither Caroline or Down Down are on there? Maybe they meant to put Caroline on but they accidently copied the wrong side of the record, and ended up with Joanne! 'I knew the title was a girl's name'!! doh

This appears to be an updated version of Mercury's previous excellent 3 CD compilation, also called 'The Essential'.

I always liked that compilation, being a mix of album tracks, rather than the usual singles collections.

I might get this.

The remit of these budget-priced comps is always not to include every big hit, hence the inclusion of live versions / B-sides and other odds and sods! Makes for a varied selection, but not exactly the starting place for any Quo novice (if such a thing exists!) looking for a decent introduction. No doubt if Tesco are stocking it'll tempt a few punters to drop it in their trolley!
