One of ZZ Top's from current U.S Tour is up on Dimeadozen (01.09.16) But from reading the review by the Taper it appears they are just going through the motions like Quo, Below are Tapers Comments.
A pretty by-the-numbers setlist for ZZ Top, who I've seen a few times over the years. But the last time I saw the little ol' band from Texas was on their Recycler tour in 1991-ish. Of course, the guys aren't getting any younger now that it's 25 years since I last saw them.
My cohorts and I thought the performance was good but not great. Billy seemed to hit a few bad notes/chords during the show, but much worse, unlike their 1980s and 1990s tours, there was no stage show to speak of...the backdrop consisted of some twinkling lights and that was it. Disappointing.
Also disappointing was the fact that the setlist continues to include cover tunes (Foxy Lady, Jailhouse Rock) and other weaker tunes (Pincushion, Rough Boy, Catfish Blues) instead of their classics like "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers", "Tube Snake Boogie", "Manic Mechanic", "Pearl Necklace", etc. And even the song order in their setlist is a bit tiresome: they opened with "Got Me Under Pressure" back in 1983 on the Eliminator tour...and I'm pretty sure they ended the set with "Tush" back then, too.
So like I wrote, it was a good show but it could have been better. The stagnant setlist and lack of any imaginative stage show gives off the impression that they no longer care. And the whole show lasted only 75 short minutes, which isn't uncommon for them in recent years. But hey, at least we saw ZZ Top back in the day when they put on a great show. But those days are gone, apparently.
