In the Hello Quo DVD we saw that Spud's Ludwig kit is still going strong.
But I'm more interested in his black Premier kit. I had some old Premier drums and I copied his set up, learned the solo from Slow Train and had a blast playing along with headphones on.
Got tinnitus now 😠
Does anyone know whether he had to sell that kit when he needed a bit of cash?
Someone must know what happened to it.
I liked how he used a modern Premier kit on the reunion tours.

Got tinnitus now 😠 Does anyone know whether he had to sell that kit when he needed a bit of cash? Someone must know what happened to it. I liked how he used a modern Premier kit on the reunion tours. Good and interesting question! I have often been wondering the same! Same question about the mirror chrome Premier set he used 1977-1979/-80. It seems like he only has one tom left (the 14" rack tom) from the yelliow Premier kit used at the NTL tour. He had this drum mounted above the floor toms during the 2014 reunion tour. He actually wanted to use the old Ludwig kit on the reunion gigs but the drum tech said no.... I agree it was great that he used a black Premier on the reunion gigs, though I missed the 26" bass drum... After the 2013,shows I wrote to Spud and asked about his new kit (sizes and so on) and what happened with the original black kit. He never answered... Very strange that there's no info about the original black kit. If you ask me they are as iconic as Alans Mustang and the green and white Teles! Does anybody here have any info? Maybe something for Yvone Hanvey? An interview with Spud based about all his different drum kits during his careeer. I would love to read it! By the way: in the seventies Spud was seen in adverts both for Paiste and Zildjan cymbals. Does anybody know what kind of ride cymbal he used during the 1976 tour/the Glasgow live album?

Its a great question and one I've often wondered about. I love the old Premier drums and John's kits were one of the main reasons I did and still do play them. I'm guessing that the black '70s kits (of which there must have been a few?) were sponsor deals etc and were either given back or were in storage etc. When he left abruptly in 81 I suppose his drums stayed with the bands touring/recording gear and were never actually his (or in his house etc).
As we know he has got the 14" Yellow tom that he took on the last reuinion (which does beg the question wheres the rest of it?)and the old Ludwig kit (from when they transported all their own gear). But in the 80s/90s he always seemed to have the green Yamaha kit which I'm guessing was his own personal one with the Premiers being long gone. Would love to know the full story from the man himself though, if even he can remember it!
In answer to to cymbal question. I know he played and endorsed both brands (Zildjian and Paiste). I remember reading a John Eden interview that stated he recorded with Zildjians (as they were quiter and less likely to overload the meters with his heavy hitting!) but I'm pretty sure the Apollo live album is Paiste 2002s. Some 76 pictures show the sound edge hi hats, which Zildjian never did. The ride was 20" standard I think. Someone else may know for sure.

If you watch the link to the Life Laundry programme John does talk about his drums and I believe some may have gone to a car boot sale. Its been a while since I saw this but I remember being sad for John that he had to get rid of his kit.

Oh yes, the green Yamaha kit, I had almost forgot about that, though I did see him play it live with Diesel Band twice in the early nineties. Yes I agree that the crashes sounds like 2002 on the live album, but the ride seems too "washy" to bee an ordinary ride. It might have to do how he plays it, but it almost sounds like he uses a big crash (20-22") instead of a ride. I love the way it fills the total sound, it gives an extreme punch and drive to the entire Quo-sound!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that it actually is the mirror chrome set from 1977-79 on your photo. He started to use a gong on the RAOTW-tour and used it onwards, til the end of the NTL-tour. For the last tour he also added a timpani (which can be seen on the pic of the back cover of the JS album)
