I don't feel as strong as you do about it, however, I have never been able to like Just take me and especially Drifting away !! While I love Alan's voice on Backwater and Don't think it matters I hate it in Drifting away I thought Alan's singing at the reunion gigs of Backwater and Just Take Me, and the other songs in the set he has vocal parts on, was actually better than ever it was. There was a strength and maturity in his singing that didn't depend on any macho aggression to give feel to the songs.
His singing always gave that essential third dimension to Quo back in the FF days, and provided that ideal contrast to Francis softer nasally tone, but I think sometimes he tried too hard to be different. That is true of the songs you mention on the Quo album - especially Drifting Away.
One thing is for sure, his singing and overall presence has been missed - as the reunions illustrated well.
Yep, it's only a few songs here and there I never liked his voice, but then again the same goes for Francis and Rick... example: love Mystery song and Coming and Going, hate his voice on a song like The Loving Game or Don't give it up. Francis: love his voice on Roll over lay down, hate how he uses his voice on Speechless or I'll never get over you. Yep Alan's missed big time for sure. If it was up to me they'd be back with Alan and John tomorrow.

We've sent for the doctor...just hang on. Nowt wrong with HT. It's not as good as anything the FF recorded, but if you're looking for a decent album that people haven't heard of then it fits the bill. OK DT just twisting your tail..I was going to try to justify Famous In The Last Century but couldn't even think of a reasonable piss take

Spot on Catlady, his singing was actually the best out of the 3 of them on the reunion tours IMO.

Victor and accidentprone - agree completely with both of you. Interesting comparisons on Ricks singing as well. Alan's vocals were definitely the best of the three at the reunion tours. No question I think about that. It was a delight to listen to him

Ok fair enough but if that's the case, why call it shite? Well 2 out of 8 tracks ain't exactly brilliant. Well I can't stand any of the songs on IYCSTH, but it's not shite, it's just that I don't like it.... actually though....

Certainly more than happy to listen to Piledriver in full - especially as a treat over the airwaves for a change Some non Quo fan rock folk who haven't heard the album properly should be impressed when they hear the likes of A Year and Unspoken Words amongst the classic rockers on the album letsrock

Good choice..bit of everything on the Great Piledriver album.Fantastic guitar solos, superb drums,Lancasters bass playing and Parfitt emerging as something really different in the rhythm guitar department...and 8 fantastic songs wrapped in a brilliant production.

I tried to wrench my arm round to pick something controversial, but it just got the better of me and voted for Piledriver.
