Maybe if he wasn't SOOOOOOO bothered about the money, he could actually extricate himself from Quo, go solo and enjoy the artistic freedom if not the financial gains.
It seems more and more to me that he wears this 'look at me, i'm more honest about this than anyone else, just in it for the money' thing like a badge of honour. I don't know the guy so it's probably only a part of his 'thing', but he seems to hold something not dissimilar to a grudge about being in Quo. And in a lot of the radio/internet interviews i've heard of him in the last 5 years or so, he's sounded very tired, bored, a bit 'meh' and monotone, like there is no spark of his old self there at all.
I'm genuinely starting to believe he just wants to bow out like a dull fart - he wants to kind of bury any kind of blaze of glory in his pessimism. I wonder if he's looked at the peak years of Quo, realized how much of a dick he was on the coke, and is just kind of repulsed by the whole experience.
Unusual sort of bloke? Or just too normal to be a rock star?
Probably Lancaster and Parfitt's fault for wanting Quo to be a rock band.

Francis gets away with it because of what came before when Quo really was Quo. The Quo name was built into something great years ago. So great that it is very very hard to destroy. Francis took Quo's music over to main stream fans. It partly worked. Despite losing more earlier fans they picked up enough new fans to be viable.
I think had they continued by bringing JC back and with AL calling most of the shots they would have ended up like ACDC. They would have eventually cracked the USA. They took the wrong direction with WSOL. The Wanderer and Margie Time all wrong directions. Slowly but surely over the years in all their market Countries fans dropped away. They sold less and less albums and mistakenly put it down to the fact they were an aging band.
Argh what might have been. I still feel sorry for AL and JC cos it wasn't their fault.

I thought personally that WSOL was fine within the commercial FF remit and sitting amongst the core albums that had preceded it. It was only when John left that things wholesale fell away with the recordings.
Its not a case that any of them should have called the shots individually in my opinion - more to do with Alan and Francis instead curbing the frictional tug of war between them. Things worked, at their peak from that collective 'sum of all the parts' approach that earned them the successes and heights from the early seventies for several years. Such parity should have been restored without any one individual dominating too much.
Francis wanted to make the band too poppy, while Alan wanted Quo to become heavier than they already were in the early and mid seventies. As it turns out, all band members wrote too much bland and aimless material after John had left. The other ingredient, the drugs and excesses had also taken their toll.
Fortunately the gigs remained great events right up to and including the End of the Road.

Yeah WSOL worked as a single. In hindsight it was a mistake Imo in the context of 'cracking the States' . Smoother slicker sounding music turned out not to be what the US fans wanted. AL was right and on that basis he should most definitely have had the biggest say in the bands musical direction as it was he who first recognized that Quo was not going down their best possible path.
Being a niche band it did take ACDC a very long time to crack the US market but they stuck to what they were best at and eventually won through. Quo were a niche band too and unfortunately didn't stick to what they were best at. I remember well when ACDC were a far smaller name band than Quo was. But once a band cracks USA all that changes.
A shame really for Quo and I do wonder if the band had its time over whether they would have done things alot differently . Alot more like how AL wanted them to do.

Where have you been TVQ..weve missed you. That said I still reckon they only had that window of opportunity to crack the States and that was off the back of their No.1 Pommie albums and No.1 single. 1977 was their moment in the sun and they tripped over their own feet with RAOTW. The beginning of the end imo. It all unravelled from there. AC/DC took the opportunity and just ran with it...the backing of Albert Studios is an underlying presence. |

I know quite some people consider everything after Blue for You to be a downfall, but personally I think they recovered strongly on WYW, JS and NTL...for me everthing went wrong after John left...1982 still had songs that I liked although it was very clear John wasn't there anymore... BTB was the real end for me, that album I haven't played since 1985 or 1986... Then when Alan left...omg, I made the mistake to buy ITAN without listening to it first, cos I had done that with all quo albums till that point... What a mistake !! Since then I have not bought one single album without listening first ! Dreaming and it's feckin synth trumpets... speechless eeeeww ..Invitation, good grief... and then I saw them on tv...Rhino's ballerina stuff, omg... thank goodness Rhino was different when I saw them in 2009...but still, it never got back to the old quo I used to know...it just became a totally different band |
