He is Canadian, was the leader of The Guess Who, and had / is having a strong solo career.
He has written an array of song types, but to me he is the King of Boogie-woogie rock & roll.
Like this one, it doesn´t any get better than "Star Baby" !

He had a good run but it's been years since he's been in the charts.
He didn't form the Guess Who, he only joined after the original keyboard player quit. Randy Bachman was probably seen as the leader of the band and it wasn't until he quit several years later (to eventually form Bachman Turner Overdrive) that Burton Cummings became the face of the band.
He's probably best known for these two songs...

...and he eventually was pushed out of the band. But to me in regards to contributions to the band, longevity, etc....Burton was the key man of that band over its life.
P.S. He put out a doublé álbum about 7 years ago that was as good or better than his solo stuff from the 70s. Lot of great songs on that album. And he still tours pretty regular.
"Break It To Them Gently" is a fantastic song, but where I was at the time (Florida, U.S.A.) it never got any radio play. "Stand Tall" on the other hand was a monster hit, deservedly so. Though I think his best ballad type song was "I will play a rhapsody", possibly the most beautiful song I´ve ever heard.
He did get his due to a degree, having said that in my opinión he was underappreciated in the U.S. I think Canadians "got" him better than we Americans did.
