We arrived at around 5pm for soundcheck as i had asked the management if i could play a song on drums with them. To my surprise, they said yes. I got to play Hold You Back, it was a fantastic experience even though i messed up one or two times!
John complemented my drumming and shook my hand. The drummer from "T Rex" Paul Fenton was there, he enjoyed it too.
The venue was kind of a village hall with tables, a balcony and dance floor. Most of the audience were older people who perhaps only knew RAOTW and WYW but they seemed to enjoy it which was nice to see. Of course there were the hardcore fans too. So quite a bit of waiting around as there was no support band. The band came on at 8pm and all us 'punters' went down the front.
They started with Spinning Wheel Blues which was surprising as i expected Junior's Wailing but it worked as an opener to be honest. Roll Over Lay Down next which, like almost all the songs, was performed slower than usual, John is almost 70 so i don't blame him for taking it easy.
In My Chair next which JCQ certainly do justice. Baz comments on how there will be some songs we'll be scratching our heads at and then the band proceeded to go into Rocker's Rollin' which was sung brilliantly by the new bassist, Rick Chase. A very talented bloke.
April, Spring.... next which JCQ also perform very well, one of my favourite quo tracks. This was followed by Down The Dustpipe (in case you're wondering i'm getting the setlist online).
After this was A Year which is also performed brilliantly by the band, wish i heard that one live more often, such a good track. Act 1 was finished with Blue Eyed Lady which was also done significantly slower but it was still a great version of the song.
In the break there was a raffle with prizes including tickets to a cardboard boat race (whoopy-feckin-doo) and a signed shirt. Act 2 started with Don't Think It Matters which was nice to hear, never heard it live before. Paper Plane after which got everyone singing along.
Pictures of Matchstickmen is always done brilliantly by JCQ, better than when CQ do it. Rain next which was quite ironic as it was pissing it down all day there. Just before Hold You Back, Baz talked about me drumming with them in soundcheck and then said about 'keeping rock alive' and 'getting youngsters to play proper instruments' good on ya Baz. Don't Waste My Time next which certainly wasn't a waste of time (see what i did there? No? Feck off then).
Roadhouse Blues now which included a bit of Slow Train and Gotta Go Home, hreat way to finish the main set. Encore started with WYW which is a bit mainstream for JCQ but they did it justice like the rest of the songs. Then an audience singalong of Most Of The Time which was great. As usual, it ended with Down Down and a brief but great drum solo. An overall fantastic gig, my only criticism would be to start with Junior's Wailing.
Got Blue For You vinyl signed by John and POMM signed. Got Baz and Mick to sign the 'In Your Garden' Predatür CD, looking forward to hearing it. Was nice chatting to them and got a drunken drumming masterclass from Paul Fenton which was erm.... interesting.
10/10
