While finding out that my cassette player was indeed still functional, I played WYW and OTL (the albums) back to back, and to my surprise, I found that WYW is (to me) a more listenable album, better sound and I like all the songs.
OTL has a load of top songs on it, (LL, MOTT, Over and Done, Down Down and arguably Broken Man) and a ballad I don't have the patience for any more (becoming curmedgeonly) and a handful of songs which are good on a good day and not so good otherwise.
It was most surprised that WYW seemed to have a better sound overall, more drive, more clarity. I wasn't expecting that.
Is that just my ears?

It's probably more a matter of what kind of sound you prefer. Others no doubt will find the sound of OTL better.

That's where different opinions are very interesting because my preference is definitely with OTL

I suspect OTL but I might have to do the same as you Mrs F - test out my old cassettes and cassette player - that's all I have of those albums. Be an interesting experiment. I'll let you know the results in due course.

WYW has, IMO, the "best" sound of any Quo album by a country mile. Excellent production - Pip, I know! The guitars sound immense and clear and crunchy. Great detail - listen to YSF for example - you can hear everything - even the drums and keys spring out when required - they must have been playing the faders like a musical instrument during the mixing. Nice use of effects. It has the sound very like IYCSTH would have had, if they had not mixed in the brass and backing vox. But that said - OTL has a sound all of its own - very chimey-reverby - very jangly - like it was recorded in a tiled room - so still fine to listen to. There are no sounds or production techniques on the WYW album that date it in any way.It still sounds fresh to me and it is the only time they ever got the balance between a produced and raw sound 100% correct.

Co-produced by Quo & Pip was it not?

I think WYW wins it for me, but only just. As gates said, OTL has a spound all of it's own and one that I love as well.

... immense and clear and crunchy ... That's it! Right down to the "crunchy". The janglier sound of OTL is probably right for the masterpiece Down Down, too.

May I compliment YSF on its fantastic lyrics too ...
"It was all a joke, we hardly spoke, she was the sister of a friend!"
Pull the other one mate, that's the fifth time this week, oh all right then ...

Even compared to other FF albums I have to say OTL has the thinnest and less heavy sound. It's hard to say, because I love the songs, but it is not a preferable sound. I like the sound of WYW better. Even the disposition of songs are better on WYW.

No comparison, OTL.

Just soundwise WYW is miles ahead of the very thin sounding OTL....
