I have long thought him to be the reason why the FF sounded and played the way they did.
However i am not a musician, but many people on here feel the same.
I know in the early days he looked and played like a demon, but there has to be more than that.
Rossi has kept the band going for 50 years, without him Quo would be a memory.
Manchester Appollo two years ago reminded me what Coghlan brought to the band.
Ive already said im not a musician, but he had something!!

John Coghlan means a lot to the sound. He is brilliant.

He has the "it" when it boils down to rhythm and groove.... I just love it.
It is like hearing Ian Paice on 70's Deep Purple records... Sounds so easy, and is essential to the overall appreciation of the song.

I think 'feel' is the word we're looking for.He would stick little bits in that can't be copied. Not being able to define what he does is a tribute to his genius.I've heard all the drummers since he left. They are all fine drummers but not members of Status Quo..none of them have done anything on disc like his playing on Big Fat Mama from 3:24 to the end of the song or Slow train at 2:05(smack on the cymbal and off goes the train) to 3:37 or the quiet bit and build up in Roll Over Lay Down..he's the drummer in Status Quo.

I've been a musician for 14 years... I can try break it down into technical terms but, I can't....And no one on here can. For all the faults people find with Jeff and Matt, they were and are better drummers than Spud. However, Spud understood the feel and groove that was needed. He, along with the other 3, created that sound. That's it. They don't understand it, Rossi refuses to believe it and I refuse it look too much into it as it would ruin the magic The other three bring out something in Spud and Spud brings out something in the other 3. What that is, I don't wanna know

I'm not very sensitive to the drum sounds (as long as it's not too hissy) so I can't give a view. Also I never saw the band live with Spud in the olden days. (I missed him by a few months.) As a long time Quo LISTENER I didn't find not having John there made any difference to my appreciation of the Quo sound on stage, but this may be because Pete was doing a great John-style job. John was in a cadet band, wasn't he? So he probably knew how to make a small kit do a great job.
I think what happened is that the Quo Sound developed by accident, and John was one of the four contributors, and people who hear John think of that Quo Sound. Whereas I don't, I think of guitars, that is what the Quo Sound is to me. I'm a bit deaf to the nuances of the drummers.
And in any case the core sound was dribbling away before John left.

Hi All, IMHO I think all Quo's drummers are or have been good, while one may be technically better than another they have all done a great job since JC passed the baton. JC was the original and none of the other drummers have come anyway near to replicating the original skin masters sound, mostly because they want to make their own mark which each have done the all sound different in some way.
At the end of the day they are employed to fit their skillset within the band and they have, I would say that through the different incarnations of Quo we all have our favourite and our worst to me it doesn't matter they are QUO!!!......... letsrock
Geoff.

Brought up on JC , so for me he IS the drummer. Jon Pertwee is Doctor Who as well.
