Pete Kircher the best drummer they've had by far IMO Cheers I think so too. JC was yes!, and big part of early quo, but there were a bit much 'kling klong' hassle he played, and novadays especially. FR/RP drive was too hard to him ff tour they did. PK, just solid stuff!!!!

Funny how we all hear things differently. No disrepect to PK but for me the difference between JC and him is night and day! The fact that JC left just before I got into Quo and so wasn't on the NEC vid or at EOTR or Live Aid is probably my biggest Quo regret. I often imagine what those concerts would have been like with JC in the driving seat. Even better is my guess!
JC is and always will be the man for me. Technically, he may not be the best 'drummer' out of the lot of them but for me he's the best 'Quo drummer' by an absolute mile. The original and best.

Every now and then a topic arises that makes this place so interesting.
For those of us who followed Quo from the early days a certain Mr John Coghlan towers above the rest, and by a country bloody mile.
Its an age thing, some say he wasnt the most technical drummer.
Mmm "Quo were never a technical band"
They were at their best,a loud, rough arsed rock band and christ they were good.
Mr Coghlan was the bedrock of that sound.

I was too young (just!) to follow Quo from the early days but I still realised (even before the reunion tours) that JC towered above the rest. Even in 2013/14 this was still the case. Saw FF in April 14 and CQ with Leon in May 14. The difference in the drumming was huge. One (JC) was an integral part of the heavier/driven Quo sound and one (Leon) was just a decent drummer plodding away....

As Whoppa describes above – John Coghlan has “IT” IT = An almost lazy/faltering but confident swing - the “swagger” that IS the proper Quo sound
Since 1981/1982 all of the others have been “Quo’s drummer for the present time” – we know it and the band know it

I would be surprised if anyone was blown away by the playing of John or Alan as a part of any other band. But it's that chemistry thing again. They are both incredible live when they play with rick and francis. I was simply astonished by Johns drumming FF2014 - he was a sheer powerhouse - fantastic in every way
So yeah, by miles and miles, he is the best drummer SQ could ever possibly have
If John had been asked to return without Alan, would he have accepted? He made a point about liking Army - I think that was code for saying he'd play it. I just can't see him playing BB or anything else more recent...

In my opinion, John WAS the best for QUO - in the 70s.. But he just doesn't have it in him anymore, it was very obvious he couldn't keep up on the FF reunions and it shows especially on Don't Waste My Time, and on Caroline where he starts playing shuffle in the intro..
I think Leon doing excellent. Matt was really dynamic in his playing, by far the most dynamic drummer I've seen, but I think Leon is the closest to John they've gotten!

Hi All, Like many on here Spud IMHO not simply because he was 1/4 of the FF but he also was very instrumental in the arrangements of the music that quo made, Adding his influence into that of Francis/Rick and Alan rather than just being a skin banger. As for PK/JR/ML and LC well I cant say if they have or had any influence in whatever track like JC used to do.
Having said the above they have all done a good job at keeping the Quo name alive which is more important whether you like whatever version of CQ there has been after FF job done as far as I can tell as I doubt many on here could have done a better job....
Geoff.
