Probably a silly question, but what exactly is the Rossi/Young song Dirty Water actually about.
I have a theory its targeted at someone out of control of their life, and getting into deep water, and the person trying to warn them can't get into their head as they can't swim in this Dirty water.
Or have I got this all wrong?

I'm sure Rossi has alluded to it being about an ex-partner

I'm sure Rossi has alluded to it being about an ex-partner I suppose it depends on how you interpret it. It became such a huge concert staple. Do we know what year it was first introduced to the set lists?

Do we know what year it was first introduced to the set lists? 1977, for the Rockin' tour along with Rockin', You Don't Own Me and Hold You Back. Rossi used his Ovation Viper for the track and Rick tried several different guitars - I think he used a strat at one point for it

It's clearly one of their environmental tracks, anticipating the literal shit-show that our water industry would become in the ensuing decades - somebody send a copy to OFWAT!

But it was written before an environmental issue. In fact today it would make a good song to use as a campaign towards Water Aid, but it was written long before things like that.

You obviously don't remember The Thames in the late sixties and early-to-mid seventies then. As for the song, not a great favourite of mine, if I am honest. A bit of a sing-a-long, but so is Roll Out The Barrel, and I don't rate that highly either.

I've always assumed it was about his ex-wife. In fact I've always looked at the RAOTW album as being, in part, Rossi's divorce album.

I don't know what it's about but it's a great song, one that I always looked forward to in the set.

Hard to imagine it's that much better even today with 10 million peoples outgoings eventually ending up in it, I mean would you swim anywhere east of Hammersmith?, not many fish do!.
Agree about Dirty Water, not a track I've ever played much, It's not a bad song just far too mellow for my tastes, saying that it's nowhere near as unlistenable as Margerine Reekin Time.

It's a rubbish song, but as a cocktail so much better than dirty water.

And yes, I don't remember which documentary Rossi said it was about his first wife. Round that time they were separated or almost.

However, now you mention environmental issues, you do know that Greenpeace was founded back in the early '70s - '71, I think
