Just spotted this. Quite fascinating but, for some reason, not that surprising. Well, not to me. Not a single band in this week's top 40 that was formed after the year 2000. And the figures since 2020 are really astonishing when compared with even the 90's.
Increasing individualisation since the turn of the century is one theory being put forward. Which they both seem to agree on. There will no doubt be social and psychological reasons for that and I dare say social media has a part to play. Everything is very much geared to the 'self'. Which is interesting when it's called 'social' media.
Nice find 👍

Yeah I thought it was really interesting
It's not just rock, it's all genres
I knew there were less bands now but hadn't realised the situation was so severe
It would be tempting to blame Spotify etc but this research shows the trend started long before steaming came in

Took ages to clear up. Boo boom.... As a non-streamer - even with a cold - I can't really comment on it's impact on 'bands' but I wouldn't have thought that was a reason. I wonder if there's a gender thing going on. Historically, I suppose blokes were into bands more than women/girls, although not exclusively obviously. I'm generalising. But the demograph seems to be more female than male these days for much of what we hear or perceive to be chart or popular music. The biggest acts in the world, people like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande etc, seem to have a female dominated following. Probably rubbish but I'm just throwing into the (little) mix

I don't know, I don't really look at the chart stats, but it makes sense that there are fewer (permanent) bands, as - the article says, but common sense - individual musicians can do so much by themselves now.
But there are still loads of older bands, touring away, topping up the pension funds and having fun.
And there are plenty of bands around on what used to be the 'circuit' - except - this really is a bit new and very worrying - even touring is becoming too expensive for bands, and too expensive for venues, which are closing down in droves.
A friend of ours says she basically gets her fix at say two medium sized festivals a year, where at least you do get human musicians turning up to play on a stage.
