Last night, I was lucky to be invited to a short promo gig from the reunited band Fairground Attraction.
And what a moving experience it was even though I'd not be a fan or follower back in the late 80s. I discovered the music of Mark Nevin (the songwriter of the band) in 2008 and I've followed him ever since.
This was a promo by the record label at the start of their 1st UK tour and to promote a new album Beautiful Happening.
Seeing the genuine musical joy between the two reunited band members, Eddi Reader (what a voice) and Mark Nevin (what a songwriter) was very moving. And of course, my mind was also back to our beloved Quo and those gigs of 2013/14.
The main difference, beyond styles of music of course, is that unlike Quo they both lapsed into the background after their split. This was as much a musical opportunity for them as it was for the fans. And yes, of course it was hugely musically important for Alan and John but not for all of Quo. As we know too well.
Mark and Eddi started speaking again when the horrors of 2020 helped them take stock of their lives. Their last ever gig was in Japan, 35 years ago in June 1989. In 2023, their Japanese fans offered them a few gigs for this summer. And this galvanised them to start making music again.
It's not cash grab to make big bucks either; though I hope they make some money. I only bought a ticket to a gig a few weeks ago, at a sensible price. Listening to so many new tracks off the album shows that it's about the music. They played 7 tracks, all new except for Perfect.
The new album was possible because Mark never gave up songwriting and teaching song writing.
I felt goose-bumps hearing them sing Perfect again. But I loved the new music even more.
Mark was asked to write this track by an industry contract to see something +ve from that awful time in 2020. And this the track.
I'm really looking forward to the full gig next weekend.
They start in Wolverhampton tomorrow, I gather.
