Not a bad little song, but I always found it odd why it was on the Dog of two head album 3 times.
First version is short, then slightly longer, then we finally get the complete version.
I always skip the short versions, but in the days of when we only had vinyl or 8 track cassette, that would have proven difficult.
What was the idea of have it on there 3 times?

Pretentiousness Given this was 1971, maaaaaan. The actual idea behind it we can only speculate on but I imagine it was to almost give the album a 'theme'. You used to get that a lot where there would be a track early on, then one at the end would be a repeat and say something like 'reprise'. A couple of other examples would be: Queen - Sheer Heart Attack ( In The Lap Of The Gods...revisited)UFO - Obsession (Lookin' Out For No.1 (reprise)) There will be plenty others, I'm sure, but these are just off the top of my head. Famous In The Last Century is another example, given that the song bookended the album. A better idea than edited versions of Na Na Na would have been to include Tune To The Music or even a finished version of Shifting Sand. But these were hippy, trippy days

But these were hippy, trippy days Very different times wasn't it? What intrigues me is Nanana isn't the sort of song that suites it to be built up to, or to put it another way a build up to the complete song seems wasted. I'm not saying its a bad song, but you'd expect something like that for a Stairway to Heaven type song, where having heard the teasers, to get to the final song was worth waiting for. Non the less the idea behind it maybe we will never truly know. Maybe someone in the record company thought it would break up the album due to other songs being quite heavy and longer in time lengths. So glad they didn't continue with this idea 🤗

I think it's dennis who has speculated before that it's because Dog was a song light in length I wish they'd included in my chair, which of course had been a single only release and wasnt recorded as part of the dog session. I've never liked nanana much

I think The Dog album is perfection, and the only way to have improved upon perfection is to have included Shifting Sand.

I think The Dog album is perfection, and the only way to have improved upon perfection is to have included Shifting Sand. I agree for the most part the Dog is excellent. Personally I think Hello for me was shear perfection, if I had to choose Hello is the best of the FF albums. I just found it weird using Nanana the short sections, to a big build up to nothing really, I never got my head around it. Seems a shame as the rest of the tracks are awesome and sowing the seeds of proper Quo, but Nanana for me stalls the energy, so I skip the two short versions. But back in the day this would have been impossible if you want the songs to link up normally.

I prefer Nanana to Claudie, but if Shifting Sand was on the album, and only one Nanana, it would be even better.
The Dog was truly the sound of a band arriving at greatness.

I think it's a wonderful song, lovely guitar and fantastic when the piano comes in, simplicity is genius.

Never liked it, still don’t - the beginning of FR’s trip down ‘the ol’ sh*te road’. Awful stuff. 🤷♂️
