This is actually my favourite version of Don't waste my time the 98 version.
I love the way it flows along, not rushed 👌
And this ain't too shabby either:

I hate what they did with the vocals on Whatever You Want. They sound very airy, and the delay isn't needed.

Too much of Andy's 'honky tonk' piano in DWMT and not enough cowbell.

Both utterly pointless. Neither is anywhere near as good as the original. Particularly Don't Waste My Time. Although just my opinion of course.
The need to re-record original material is lost on me. You can almost put your money on the outcome being a lesser version. Although I do exclude a lot of Aquostic from that statement.

Both weak as.
No power, no oomph, no drive, no passion, no nothing really. Just half a band trying too hard to justify losing the other half and pretending it's better, when it clearly is not ... not by a country mile.

DWMT - too bloody fast, it’s meant to shuffle/swing along (see ‘Piledriver’), not gallop! - ffs🙄 Why they bothered is beyond me🤷♂️

Listening again, it does sum up the differences in sound between the band 'versions'. That lazy, crunchy, bluesy drive of the original DWMT with Frames nasally vocal just pushing through, vs the 'polished', faster, plonky piano version with Frame higher in the mix. An unnecessary cover of their own song, as the majority they redid were.

I love the original so much, one of my all time favourite Quo tracks. Reading the comments on here, I'll skip the later versions!

I wonder whose idea it was to re-record these songs? Or any songs. Band, management or record company? Most of us will be aware of the reasons for the re-recordings on Riffs - and I get those, so-so as they were - but these '98 ones are beyond me. Quo lost that languid, lazy sounding swing a very long time ago. And songs like Don't Waste My Time and In My Chair demonstrate the style to a T. Bringing things up to date is probably thought to be an improvement. Think again

I wonder whose idea it was to re-record these songs? Or any songs. Band, management or record company? The accountant & PR person. Any classic rock station playing Quo, the PR person can say "here, don't play that old muffled version, play this nice clean crisp version instead" = accountant sees performance royalties to the current band (as at 1998) rather than AL & JC.

I know NOTHING about drum kits or drum terminology, I'll openly admit that, so apologies for the lack of technical description as I say this:
For me, the biggest problem with both of these is the drum note is too high - it's like a synthesizer drum, or something from an 80s new wave/electronic band. It needs a much deeper, heavier note, to thud along.

As others have already stated, these re - recordings are beyond pointless and plainly inferior to the originals. However, they also re - recorded Pictures of Matchstick Men around this time and I think that is great. A nicely understated version that captures the essence of the original. Maybe this shows us that 12 bar blues is about “feel” and the slicker you make it, the “feel” is lost IMO.

Is it about royalties / hoping the new versions get radio play?
Yes, dwmt ruined by the excess piano, a large complaint for me in the bands live show that gradually crept in everywhere. Vocals far higher in the mix compared to the 70's,a point that is true for most post FF recordings.
I had high hopes for this WYW. In 86, Rick had said something along the lines of "if we're recorded WYW now, I know exactly how to get the best out of it", he was saying it could be more powerful. Sadly this version is sterile, far worse than the high energy, faster live versions of the late 80's when they really did kick the song
There's not much Quo I haven't listened to. The recent set of prerecorded hits being the main thing. Agreed it's pointless, whereas with aquostick it was painful 😆👍
