I've often wondered which Quo single got the most air play on the radio during its time in the charts and just before it made the charts.
I remember In The Army Now was played very heavily on Radio 1 at the time, so I'm going with that.
Any thoughts?

Most Quo singles throughout the 1970/80s & early 90s received a lot of airplay on radio 1. (6 plays per day) The last single to be played on R1 was I didn’t mean it in 1994. Then basically no airplay until the Heavy traffic period in 2002. Heavy traffic album was album of the week & Jam side down was an A listed single (radio 2). Radio 2 took over from radio 1, especially for older acts, regularly getting 6 - 8 million listeners per day.

In My Chair must have gained quite a bit of airplay as it hung around the charts for quite a while, I think

Quo were also continuously gigging & building their name. Radio 1 DJ Tony Blackburn once said live on air…”down the dustbin for this one”…That’s how much he knew 😂 |

But was the lack of airplay due to the record company and the money they invest? If that's the case, Phonogram didn't want to spend a penny in promotion the album/singles. |

Yet most of Quo singles I heard on the radio the week before they got released. Could that explain why they flopped? These were the 1st 2 Quo singles not to go top 40 since 1969. Usually Quo singles would chart without airplay the week before. They would maybe chart at 48 1st week, then 30. After that they would be A listed on R1 then move into the top 20 & usually top 10. It never happened with Not at all (50) & Little Dreamer (76). During this period Rick & Francis did do a live interview with Steve Wright on R1. They played live snippets of Little dreamer on his show. Perfect Remedy came out as planned & reached 49 (Quo’s worst album chart position for 20 years) Remarkably though it still made UK silver selling over 60k copies.The year after (1990) Quo released Anniversary Waltz which sold 400k copies & went to no’2. Likewise RAOTY album reached no’2 in 1990/91, selling close to a million copies in the UK alone. This year was also a massive sell out tour with 3 nights at Wembley & NEC arena’s + extra dates added all over the UK. The promotion campaign in 1990 compared to the year before was like chalk & cheese. It was billed as Quo’s 25th anniversary in 1990. |

Rockin' All Over The World is the one I heard most on the radio, I used to sing it all the time when it came out to the point that my Mum bought me it to shut me up. 47 years later and I still like it, I la la like it, sorry I couldn't resist.
If it hadn't been for that song, I might not have become a Rock fan.
