We Talk Too Much review.
I agree about his view on the album with Hannah Rickard, I've always liked it as I've said on here a few times since it's release. I was expecting a country flavoured album from them though with what had been said leading up to that album, so maybe that helped me in that regard.

The long interview is pretty good. Not vast amounts new to us on here but slightly different angles. It's worth a listen for some of his reasoning, for example, on why he didn't do any more FF, etc. Open mind required (don't waste your time otherwise) but Rossi seems to be getting a bit more honest and open in recent times i.e. not falling back on the tyring cliches like "insecure little showoff" (not mentioned once!). Phil Aston's very good. Possible new solo album coming.

I can hear the influence of his Tunes and Chat tour, given him confidence in telling his stories and music.
Sad to hear that the 2014 reunion gigs in Europe lost money. But overall, he was more empathetic if still mystified at our love for the old lineup. And I can see that now, if he's moved on and we haven't.
Phil Ashton made a lovely point that Francis' songs can have many other arrangements in other musical genres. John Coghlan proved that with his jazzed up Quo. I loved their version of POMM.
I hope he does release another solo album as he hopes to.

But overall, he was more empathetic if still mystified at our love for the old lineup. And I can see that now, if he's moved on and we haven't. I think that mystifying works both ways. Most of us genuinely can't see how he doesn't see it. Or if he does, why he refuses to acknowledge it. He was one part of what, for many, is the greatest rock band ever to record or hit the stage. He will obviously disagree with that, certainly from a musicianship point of view because he is evidently a perfectionist to a fault; literally. But he surely has to acknowledge that it is why he is where he is today. That legacy has allowed him to enjoy these solo tours that he loves so much. We've all moved on. But many of us get frustrated at his lack of understanding of how good they were. They genuinely changed people's lives. Just as much as The Beatles or anyone else. Don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing the music or the cultural significance. But Status Quo back in the 70's really did affect people. In a very positive way. He's entitled to make the music he wants to make. But take the praise where it's due. It's not all about professionalism and musicianship. Francis, you genuinely don't appreciate how important you and that band were. |

I get it mortified, your, our pov. Having listened to the interview, he's starting to get it, what we see. And that is more than 10 years ago when he was very rude. What we can't ever appreciate is the friction in that line-up. In the interview, quite fairly, he mentions how quickly it came back. And maybe that is why for him they weren't great memories or great times. Whereas now, he said he loves travelling on the bus with Andy, Richie, Leon and Rhino. No friction. My gut tells me this is why he can't appreciate how great they were. |

I know Rick used Gibsons from time to time, but the only pics I can find of the early days, they both have Teles. And I remember Francis in an interview in the 80s saying that he didn't understand the difference between the single and double pickups, until he tried a Les Paul and found it would sustain, instead of just squeaking (he gave a vocal demonstration.) of course that experience may have been years in his past, but he seems to have stuck with Teles. Jimmy Page could make a Tele sustain, anyway. Somsetimes Francis talks as if he doesn't realise how important nostalgia is to people. I sympathise that he doesn't want to be assigned to providing other people's nostalgia for the rest of his life though. Neil in the Pet Shop Boys sounded a bit like Young ROssi. I only just thought of that. I always liked them. Tennant was also one of the few music journalists to break out of journalism and into music, too Can't think of any others offhand.
Francis always had difficulty accepting a compliment. I noticed that long before I became a fan! Weird but true.
The problem with the internal stresses was, I think, that they were always there but once they reached critical mass it really was the point of no return. Alan never saw it coming ... the very fact he never saw it coming means that in some fundamental way, he wasn't noticing things. Francis likes a quiet life. I find most of his interviews grate on me these days. Not because I have an issue with the man, just he can’t give a straight answer half the time and falls back on tired tropes, looking off camera, finding non existent innuendos, and sharing in-jokes with someone
The best interview he’s given recently was in a cafe in Holland. He chilled the fuck out and just had a normal conversation.

With regard to the Gibson thing, Mrs Flittersnoop, Rick played an SG when I first saw them in 1973. That's an abiding memory although, admittedly, it's a very long time ago. And, in retrospect, I tend to agree that it's maybe the friction within the band that has tainted his memories or made him fight against the adoration. What were amazing memories for us maybe weren't for him. Good point 👍 |

Here's my take on some of those points (just my point of view): Guitars - I think he's talking about in the studio rather than live. And even live, the tele's were modified extensively - Francis changed the pick-ups on it, Rick made huge modifications to the bridge to support his "tramline" strings and style of playing. Live the image is hugely important - in the studio the sound is everything. Jarvis Cocker was a music journalist for the NME. Compliments - Francis (and the band) had to put up with ridiculous criticism throughout their career so I would guess not fully accepting a compliment was a defence mechanism i.e. so he didn't set himself up for a criticism thereafter. My speculation on the fallouts was that they were always very different - when you are climbing to the top and pulling together against "the man" you have a common enemy/goal. When you reach the top the enemy disappears and you have to choose the direction from there - that's when people fall out! Not just in music, but also in political struggles, football (Alex Ferguson was a master at motivating Man Utd by suggesting that everyone was out to get them - difference is he kept them at the top - note: NOT a Man U fan!), etc. |

Caroline was played on a SG Junior as that was Ricks main guitar up until 1974.
He did have a different Tele between 68-71 but swapped to the SG's (he had 2, 1 with a single coil and 1 with a humbucker) between 72-74.
