Back in the 70s?
During quos purple patch were these albums widely revisited by the fan base. When they played say, railroad on EOTR did anyone know what it was?
I wasn’t around so… just wondered

As I recall, Pye did extensive recompiling of the Quo back catalogue - The Best... & The Rest... being especially popular. So many of us came to the original albums a tad later on

It's a good question. I can speak for my dad at the time, who didn't buy copies of Ma Kelly and Dog on release, not sure why, could have been money, he was pretty poor, still is , but he did get Piledriver, then he got The Best Of Status Quo, this one below, which contained tracks from Ma Kelly and Dog, whether he got that before Hello or together with I'm not sure, but for our family the rest is history!

I should imagine that the majority of fans were aware of 'Dog' at least given that it features on the (rear, with one exception) cover of every subsequent official 1970s Quo album.
I didn't get into Quo until 1980 but I was certainly well aware of it a short time later.

I grabbed the Dog after seeing the band on the Piledriver tour and I got Ma Kelly later that year for Christmas, so that was after Hello!. It wasn't as easy back then to know what the back catalogue was. No Google or discography. You just had to browse through the record racks in the shop to see what was there. Those PYE compilations mentioned did help, especially The Best Of.... and this one below I think actually charted. I can only speak from personal experience but I don't think either of the albums were well known when they were released and most fans only latched on them later.

My elder sister bought the Dog album in 1971, when she and her boyfriend at the time, went to watch the band in the pubs around Essex, including the Wake Arms pub near Epping. I was in to T.Rex at the time, Bolan Boogie and Electric Warrior being the albums I was playing. My ears did prick up when I heard the boogie shuffle when my sister played the dog album and after seeing the band play at the Harlow Playhouse in early 72, the rest, as they say is history. I have a German double compilation album. I think it was call Pop Chronik on the Pye label, I did get Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon on cassette the same time I bought the Hello album in late '73.

I went from Piledriver to Dog when my elder brother told me "You'd like a song called Railroad". From there it was Ma Kelly and then the wait for Hello
