Would it had been a success chart wise or down no better than top 30 like Going down tonight? Hard one to say I suppose as it was the 4th release from Back to Back so could have gone either way. I suppose it would have been something different to the standard single they were putting out but maybe the powers that be thought they already had an off the wall hit with Marguerita time so wanted a more high paced hit again?? This would have probably pushed Francis more to the front despite Rick supposedly to have sung it instead. It that version exists somewhere like speculated would be interesting to hear one day. I don’t think he physically plays on the recording listening to it???

I like to think it would have been a bigger hit than the, frankly, dreadful Going Downtown Tonight but you can never really tell with these things. The fact that a 4th single from a pretty awful album got as high as it did (15 or something?) was quite bizarre looking back. Making speculation on the original alternative almost impossible.
It got a good review I remember in the music press with at least one journalist - in Kerrang! I think - saying they preferred the B-side when reviewing the single. It was a nice, bluesy(ish) slow song with good lyrics and one of the better ballads Quo have done in their career.
I suspect it's one of those opportunities missed where almost everyone can see the attraction of a song as a single apart from the music company.

It would have been interesting if they'd released it as a single featuring a different vocalist to the album version. Maybe they could have backed it with Alan's version of Ol' Rag Blues!

Rick did indeed lay a vocal performance down for this track, and it still exists. In fact, at least eight takes of this track exist.

It’s a shame it wasn’t used maybe the vocal wasn’t up to scratch or something? It would have been nice for Rick as it would have suited his voice better than that other shouty 80s rock track on the album.

A song that's even worse than Going Downtown Tonight, and also with that seriously irritating synth sound! Whoever thought that was a pleasant noise?

It's a difficult decision for me as I like both songs equally. I think after the success of Marguerita Time which proved it was bought by the general public and not Quo fans, the record company were desperate for one more hit, and in hindsight TCTTG probably seemed too unexciting, so they asked Quo to re-record GDTT as the fans were heavily complaining that Quo seemed to forget to bring their guitars into the studio in recent times at that time, so they panicked and brought out GDTT with an added guitar solo and slightly slowed the tempo to make it sound heavier, and drums thicker and chunkier. Plus it gave the Quo fans a reason to buy something new that technically wasn't on the album. Those forces won the day over TCTTG in the end.
If I am forced to answer, honestly as much as I love TCTTG I don't really think it would have entered the top 40, and would have got minimal radio play, so it could have been potentially Not at all 5 years early, and been Quo's first real flop since the late 60's. Thank God that didn't happen then as Quo we're embarking on the End of the road tour and it would have been disaster to have a flop. I have often wondered we're Quo forced into recording The Wanderer to stage one final big hit.

I'd say it would've probably been a minor hit, and honestly it's one of my favourites from the album, which I also love.
