I got bored with the workplace chatter the other day at work so I put this on. I forgot what a strong side 1 there is. A fantastic album.

Brilliant Side 1.
Side 2, after Down Down, is the first signs they were running out of steam.
I can take it, but never a "go two".
To defeat my own argument, I think it is the order of the tracks, front loading the album.
The Spanish version with the altered running list, is far more listenable:
Side 1: Bye Bye Johnny I saw The Light Over And Done Where I Am Nightride
Side 2: Down Down Broken Man What To Do Little Lady Most Of The Time
That I can listen to quite easily. The "standard" version gets skipped after Down Down.

For anyone who wasn't there at the time, On The Level was something of a change for the band. It felt it. And the music media picked up on it as well.
For a start, 10 tracks instead of 8. A generally lighter touch right across the album in terms of production and it sounded totally different to the 4 or 5 previous releases although, to be fair, they all had a different sound to them. Something the band never got credit for. No two albums in the early to mid-70's sounded the same and they were largely self-produced.
Personally, although I love the album, Bye Bye Johnny has always let it down slightly for me. And that places it behind it's 4 immediate predecessors right away. Because I thought they were all flawless. I still do.
But Quo were SO good, it was still better than anything anyone else brought out that year.

I agree, and I was surprised Bye bye Johnny was put on the From the makers off compilation. Personally I would have added Little Lady instead.
