Is it Roy Lynes singing on this track as it doesn't sound like Rossi or Lancaster and Rick hadn't joined the band yet?

Yes, thats Roy's vocals. Though I had A CD in the 90s with a version of Need Your Love on it supposedly sung by him. The voice was completely different, I think that version of Need Your Love is actually Bob Young's voice.

I have that, only with recordings from 70-71, good compilation, almost all the Dog and Ma Kelly's. In that release In My Chair and Need Your Love are labeled as "Demo", but it's a lie, those are BBC recordings.

In that release In My Chair and Need Your Love are labeled as "Demo", but it's a lie, those are BBC recordings. I had always thought those versions were taken from an EP released in Mexico? There's a 1970 article headlined 'Status Quo - Misery Rock?' which contains comments from Francis saying that the released version of 'In My Chair' had been a second take. The first take had apparently been "really good - really miserable" but something went slightly awry and there were a few giggles "which spoiled the misery". That version on 'The Early Years' is sonically very similar to the version eventually released and, during the second verse, there's a small errant noise from Rossi's guitar which causes (you guessed it) a little giggle or two. For those reasons I reckon it's actually the earlier studio take referred to by Francis. Happy to stand corrected, of course!

Roy used to sing a lot apparently in live shows before Rick joined the band. Regarding that version of “Need your love” I saw an interview on Bob Young’s page and he was horrified how this managed to get released and said it was awful. It was supposed to be a rough run through for a bbc session but got used in error and escaped onto a compilation then eventually re releases of the pye album.
