I don't know a great deal about Metallica's stuff, especially the earlier work, so it's hard for me to appreciate this 'hybrid' but it does have a ZZ Top vibe about it, no question.
A lot of people are doing this sort of thing on YouTube these days. That and those mash ups which can be seriously entertaining.
You're right though. Some seriously talented individuals who are making a living this way, maybe because the chances of making it in the music industry are slimmer than they've ever been.
