Surely you're not suggesting that Quo without Francis, but with Rick & Alan, & possibly John, wouldn't have it's roots in the original band? You're right, a poor choice of words. I blame the heat and my brain is melting. Of course, they would be like JCQuo wouldn't they, and maybe some new numbers. What makes me cross is that John Coughlan will criticise Francis at every possible opportunity, yet has made a living for the past few years playing songs written by Francis. Hypocritical in my opinion.

What makes me cross is that John Coughlan will criticise Francis at every possible opportunity, yet has made a living for the past few years playing songs written by Francis. Hypocritical in my opinion. I'm sorry but I see John's attitude differently. And I've seen his band play a number of times; he started to being snarkier about Francis after the reunion tours. And to me that makes sense because Francis and Rick criticised his drumming on those tours. I felt that was wrong. He hadn't been playing/touring as routinely as Quo did and continued to do until 2020. But he and Alan brought back that original sound many of us still love. And then Francis put an end to any recordings with the original 4 and was snarky about any PLC material. I can't be angry with John for making some less than friendly remarks after that. What I've discovered since returning to the Quo fold after a gap of 20 years (roughly 84-2004) was how influential the playing of Alan and John was to my love of their music. He did contribute to the creating of their songs and their sound. Even if his name isn't on the writing credits. And for me, he has every right to earn a living off their music too. PS. I'm still a massive Francis fan and I'm looking forward to seeing his Tunes and Chat v much.

What do you use? I swear by Mac myself, although much prefer Maybelline lipstick. Nice telly as well. That a smart TV?

The what if Francis left speculation of course is always that.
But it's possibly unfair to say it would have resulted in a new Quo being mediocre, and clearly wrong that they would only be filling pubs or clubs.
Who would replace francis and could they write? Could they write with Alan? Micky Moody would have been in the frame as lead, maybe add a pure singer front man , eg Graham bonnet. Now that would have been interesting. Maybe Cozy on drums if John didn't come back.
What % of fans left with Alan, or even as early as John? Some say as high as 50%
From my own experience, I think many 000's left after Army and the Army tour. There was a very noticeable difference in the makeup of the audience on AC tour in comparison. The heavier crowd walked. Studio albums bombed from this point
I think they wouldn't have had hits, radio or telly, but they would have had great gigs in theatres. And good business on the festival circuit. And a big album and tour once Francis came back.

Firstly, if anyone thinks JC shouldn't be playing those songs because Francis wrote them, you're wrong. If you think it's a case of Francis coming in with all the instruments written and JC never coming up with his own parts and ideas for them, you're sadly mistaken.
Secondly, it is of course speculation if Francis left what would have happened, but it makes me laugh when I hear things like "they would have sunk without him" and "Rick, Alan and John would have turned it into a mediocre band playing bars and clubs"
You might not realise it, but the band sunk with Francis and without Alan and JC. Fans left in their droves and chart positions were at their lowest since the early days. David Walker saved them and none of it had anything to do with Francis as he and Rick still lived off the material that themselves, Alan and John produced...
If Francis had left the band and gone solo, he'd have failed. Francis going up against George Michael, Boy George, Bryan Adams, Phil Collins, Sting and Michael fucking Jackson for success in the charts with the stuff he was writing? Please...

2.16 he says he wished he had left Status Quo......... First time i've heard him ever say that. Wish he bloody had!! And what do you expect would have happened if he had left? Rick was struggling with his addictions and could not write a decent song anymore, Alan would have turned Quo into a (mediocre) hardrockband. They would have had no commercial succes anymore and the record company would have pulled the plug very soon. Quo would be gone within a year or two after Frame had left. Slade with Dave Hill would be a very good example of how they would have ended up.

To be honest I think that would have happened anyway even if they had stayed together. The rock world changed around 84-85 with Hair Metal/Rock becoming the thing and then later Grunge. The only chance I would have said Quo may have stood a chance would have been a decent rock album around the time of Britpop. I mean even Queen struggled a bit in the mid-late 80s. They would get a big album but the singles were not massive sellers. The sad death of Freddie was what pushed their sales up after 91.

Some really great postings on this thread, with a very consistent theme, Francis needed Quo as much as Quo needed him, and I agree 100% with the comments on how it all changed Post '86 Army Tour with regards to the 'Hardcore' of the 70's/early 80's disappearing at gigs and Quo record buying. I don't think for one minute that any of the Frantic Four would have made it solo, their strength was always as one unit, which gradually diluted as each of them left. Like Life, Quo has been a journey of Ups and Downs
