I went for a day out to Margate, and exploring the history of Dreamland, I spotted that a band I rather like played there on 21st July. Tickets were 60p and 70p on the door! There's no date but I looked up the gigography site and it was the Dog of Two Head tour 1972. It was so exciting to look at the whole timeline, to see the Rolling Stones... and then our Quo! I didn't photograph the front of the building because the original entrance isn't used and looks boarded up.

Supported by Snake Eye. Never to be heard of again. I actually looked them up and they did record an album in 1970, which was re-released on CD in 2016. This is them. Maaaaaan I see Vinegar Joe were on the following week as well. Elkie Brooks and Robert Palmer before they found smooooth Incidentally, my first Quo gig was 60p as well. That was March the following year. So inflation was obviously under control Great find though. I'd have been hanging back until under cover of darkness, working out how to get it off that board. Um, pardon my asking - but where (indeed, what) IS Margate? I know Del, Dave and Trig (sans sweeping brush!) etc, went there! 🤔🫣🤪

Just had a quick Google (ooh, matron) and it looks perilously close to Broadstairs. You visiting, curiousgirl?

It it's hey day, it had an amazing fun fair and giant open air train ride/rollercoaster. The huge wooden structure is all that's left now. And the fun fair is much smaller because they've gone back to gigs again! Open air. Not that big but a few thousand could stand. I've had a look and the only bands I recognise are Slade (for Christmas, of course), UB40 and Martin Kemp. They've also got a new modern art gallery, Turner Modern to attract visitors. Otherwise, I thought it a sad but quirky town. Very few chains which is good but so many rundown or closed shops. And old Victorian town that's seen better days.

We used to day trips to Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate once I think, much longer train ride. Yep, all on the Kent coast. Wonderful white rocks cliffs. The tide was out, tons of seaweed. Reminded me of Portabello when I was there in 2018. Possibly a little warmer...

It's funny, it only seems to have become cold as I've grown up I think there are lots of towns like Margate all over the UK. Destined to fall into terminal decline. Campaigns to resurrect them and to try and make them what they used to be are ill-conceived. The market simply isn't there anymore. It needs different thinking. Last time I holidayed in a place like that was probably Colwyn Bay in (I think) 1990. Spent a wet weekend there. Ended up living in the hills above it 18 years later! Bizarrely it hadn't changed!

Ah, good old Margate. Lots of happy memories of going down there on the train with my mum, dad and sister in the early 1980s when I was about 10 (I think it was a South London thing). The Bembom Brothers theme park was amazing back then; the closest thing we had to Disney World. Even getting my arm stamped on the way in to prove that I could go on any ride for free had me bursting with excitement! As we got off the train and walked past the tower block on the front, I used to look up at the monstrous thing and think that the people who lived in there were the luckiest people on earth! Different times back then, but it's funny how a 10 year old sees the world... As someone has mentioned, the theme park now hosts a range of bands during the summer and I saw The Happy Mondays there in 2019. It was a great night and we shared an Uber home, which only cost 20 each - bargain! Coincidentally, there is of course a tenuous link between the Happy Mondays and Quo...

Didn't Buster Bloodvessel ( from Bad Manners) own a Bed And Breakfast in Margate. Or did I dream it?
