It would be impossible to run a poll on best live version, even Bon Jovi do it

The Doors for me.
I heard Quo's version first and loved it (obviously). It was quite a few years before I heard the original but when I did, that nailed it. And the fact that so many artists have covered it pretty much tells me why.
But live, its no contest. Quo all day long.
I also heard a live version by Creed a good few years back. Wasn't in the same league. And it actually featured Robbie Krieger guesting.

Doors and Quo versions very different and both equally good in their own ways
Quo stripped out all the groove and cool, removed all the subtlety and replaced it with a neanderthal sledgehammer
Quo get the vote, but it's the DP one ive listened to most this last few years. Love it

Great thread! I enjoyed listening all the versions, incl Elkie Brooks.
It's Quo studio for me still, which I haven't heard for a long time. Only the live version. It surprised me with its inventiveness. I love the soft chorus at the 3 50 mark... I'd forgotten that detail.
2nd was the Deep Purple version, really loved that one. Almost equal to Quo.
3rd was Elkie Brooks
4th was Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
