I haven't seen Iron Maiden live since Twickenham in 2008, but I thought it was time to see them again before they give it all up (it’s got to happen at some point). This time I took my kids with me for their first ever gig. They're 11 & 14 and weren't even born the last time I saw Maiden.
I was quite apprehensive beforehand because based on live youtube clips and some of the songs on their latest album, I thought Bruce's voice was getting a bit thin and shouty these days. I needn't have worried because the whole band were superb! Bruce's voice is still really strong and clear, and he can hold the notes in the way he always has. The whole band were amazing (and so loud!) and they played for 2 straight hours, finishing at 11pm.
It was an incredible gig and the whole atmosphere from the band to the crowd was absolutely electric. The kids loved it, with both saying that it was far better than they had expected and they can't wait to go again.
If you've decided to miss Maiden on this tour because - like me - you thought they might be past it, I highly recommend that you get tickets before its too late.
RATING: 9/10 (I've docked them 1 point - absolutely unfairly - for dropping some of the staple classics, such as Number Of The Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Run To The Hills).

RATING: 9/10 (I've docked them 1 point - absolutely unfairly - for dropping some of the staple classics, such as Number Of The Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Run To The Hills). I'd go the other way and give them extra points for dropping those three songs, heard them a million times. My disappointment with the gig was that they ended it by trotting out, Fear of the Dark, Iron Maiden & The Trooper. If they had ditched those three as well then I'd have had it down as a sensational set list. As it was, the gig was worth it just to finally hear the track, Alexander the Great, live, what a song. While also the first time I've heard them play, Caught Somewhere In Time and Stranger in A Strange Land, top stuff.

Hence me saying that I've docked them 1 point unfairly; mainly because my kids love those classics and have never heard them live. Its a bit like the Quo conundrum - your big fan has heard those songs a million times and wants a few gems from the albums, whereas your casual punter wants the better known ones. Personally, hearing Caught Somewhere In Time was enough to make me happy and it was only the first song!

They were in notably good form at the O2. I would of course have added points for dropping those 3 little numbers, but docked them 42 points for dropping FOTD, Iron Maiden and The Trooper. (Unless they played by preferred deep cuts instead, which isn't very likely ... ) They finished at 11 because Someone wasn't In Time so they started 15 minuts late (blame the London traffic, which was horrific with the trains on go slow. We took the train on Saturday (not on Southern) and had the last train cancelled from under us at midnight. Luckily we got a taxi share and didn't actually have to take out a second mortage. And I got the rail tickets refunded, which helped a bit. The London O2 is great inside the arena, but a terrible scrum to get out of , if you have a train to catch you generally have to miss the end of the show or risk getting kettled at the Tube station doors.

The 02 is easy for me to get too though when i went to Roger Waters last month i left his show after Two Suns in the Sunset skipped 2 other short tracks but it was 10.50 but loads of people had the same idea. But it still took me over an hour to get home on the Elizabeth line as i missed one train i wanted to catch and had a 30 min wait. Though i quickly realized afterwards if i had just got off at Canary Wharf i would of been fine and got the train i wanted in the first place. i live 22 miles outside of London
