It's nothing new. They could barely afford a decent lighting rig at the time, so having dummy amps on stage is barely a reach.
It'd be a nightmare for the sound crew to make anything decent of what was being played if all the amps on stage were live. Alan in the 80s was pretty much DI'd rather than using a cab / amp, not sure about the 70s.

Alan in the 80s was pretty much DI'd rather than using a cab / amp, not sure about the 70s. Alan is probably the most unique bass player I've heard, in terms of sound. Never heard anyone drive a song like him. Him and Rick were a match made in heaven. Rhino is better technically of course but, his style is certainly different to Alan. It's to his credit that, despite illness, he still had that drive on the reunion tours
