I'm in time but somebody's missing Maybe I can find a hand for my hand, if I find a well for my wishing
A masterpiece then, now, and in the future. That timing change still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up...

For me personally, the greatest piece of music ever recorded. And with a fine lyric to boot. And it will always make the hair on the back of my neck, which seems to be increasing for some reason , stand up. When I first heard it, I had just turned 16. An easy age to suddenly decide that nothing else mattered but this.

The N.E.C. & Glasgow 82 versions are my favourite live versions but the 1991 re-recording is my favourite of the 2 studio versions.

It's my all time favourite. When I met John at that meet and greet, he asked us all what our favourite track was and I said 4500x and he pulled a wry face. Dunno why. Still love it.

What does he know? To be fair, I get the impression the whole band got fed up with the song when they played it live; the very long version that is. In fact, Francis even mentions being 'sick of it' on the live album from 1976! It effectively replaced Is It Really Me/Gotta Go Home in the set and incorporated elements of that song in the live version. I know some may find this sacrilege but had they limited the song to something closer to the original (and best for me), maybe we'd still be hearing it on and off today.

Wasn't Francis saying he was sick of all the "lame brains" etc. name calling by the press?

I'll listen to the 1976 version again. I was sure he said "getting sick of it and all that...." before introducing Forty Five Hundred Times but the memory can play tricks so I'll double check. It's been a while since I listened to that version.

"Get sick of it and all that business" I always thought it said this but listening again it certainly sounds like "You get to sing a bit and all that business". I'll get my anorak on and see what happens.

The best thing they ever did. There's so much in it. The by play between the lead guitar and the piano while the rhythm section does so much more than aimlessly chug along. At 8:47 until the play out for some reason I get the image of a big dark diesel goods train (The 149 perhaps) going slowly across some points with all the sparks and smoke before picking up speed and becoming an unstoppable force. Not many bits of music have made me visualise stuff like that. Beckenham (Backwater) Junction circa 1971-73.
