“ People have this obsession. They want you to be like you were in 1969 ! They want you to because otherwise their youth goes with you. It’s very selfish yet understandable “ Probably nail on the head for many vintage Artists/Bands still at it including Quo.

I prefer the FF because of their sound and the material they wrote. I wasn't born until 1988. If we're going by Mick Jagger's quote, then I want the FF because I was a sperm...

I suspect Mick is talking about those who were into the band in 1969 as opposed to those who caught up later. Although, admittedly, he doesn't actually say that. But the quote may be out of context, who knows? I think he's right in that it is unrealistic and that's based on age alone. But it is also understandable. Psychologically, I guess it does signify the passing of youth and even your 20's and 30's. After that, who gives a toss? Having said all that, it won't apply to everyone. Some bands are still making the same high energy music they were when they were much younger. Very few are throwing their bodies around the stage though Although, to be fair, Mick is!

Yes I think he is directing it at fans of a certain vintage who have followed the band through. Hence the “ their youth goes with you “ part of the quote. I don’t think it’s a critical comment as he says it’s understandable. But I believe the psychology behind the quote is absolutely correct.

Or maybe, they want the Stones to write a decent tune for the first time in 40 years?

I don't think people don't expect bands to change at all, but they may not appreciate them becoming a different type of band. It might work but it's a gamble. The Doobies got away with it when they effectively replaced Tom Johnston with Michael McDonald even though it meant the band evolved quite a way from what they were. Subsequent reunion line-ups have very much focused on the "classic" pre McDonald era though.

I think he is just having a pop at people who don't accept change.
These same people have aged 50 years, don't live in the same area, don't speak to old friends, change how they dress, have kids, relationships etc. Many of them may have bought a FF album, but probably now know nothing after RAOTW. They would rather listen to MOR stuff like Elton, Sting and Bon Jovi.
Time is the killer - an analogy I give is what if Piledriver was never made and the 2013 FF went into the studio and recorded it then, fresh? Guaranteed it would not sound anything like what the original was due to their age, lifestyle, recording technology etc etc. They could never sound like 1973, even with 1973 material.
And most older bands are in the same boat.

Thank god they wrote it and recorded it in 1972 ! Some things are of their time and should remain that way !
