I've discovered "outlaw country" and like lots of it. Im also listening to jj Cale and Ry Cooder. And bluegrass.
I am very surprised at myself, having always had very narrow tastes
My favourite album of 2022 was Ginger Wildheart and the sinners

I sort of began to 'mellow out' in the 80's. I went from Judas Priest and Krokus to Ry Cooder, J J Cale and Tears For Fears just like you! In the blink of an invention called the CD Getting old is no fun but, I have to say, it doesn't half broaden your musical tastes. And I have no idea why

Worse than that - I'm increasingly appreciating more prog than I used to!

After Quo had mellowed out in the early 80s, I became more of a metalhead, albeit the melody remained very important. (Never went for Slayer or Megadeth for instance.) At uni there were the neo-hippy parties, which gave me The Doors, Neil Young, the entire Woodstock line-up, so I expanded my horizon. A decade later folkmusic became highly popular in Belgium with some top bands, so I got into that as well. Classical concerts followed, although I never listen to them at home. But my main love will always be blues rock. It was Rory who started it so many years ago, and I might well leave this earth in 50 years with his music accompanying me. Mellowing out? Not for me.

I guess its more a sort of expansion than a mellowing. I certainly listen to a greater variety than I used to. I tend to appreciate music now that I used to think was a bit naff. I think I just hear it now as opposed to paying no attention because it didn't sound like my 'style'

Can't imagine not having rock in the car, but it feels good to finally appreciate that there are other genres that are also very enjoyable
