Binge watched Seasons 1 and 2 on the weekend. Both took place where I live on lovely Vancouver Island.
Put together very well. 10 people dropped off about 10kms from each other to set up their camp in the wilderness of the northern point of the Island. Each given 4 cameras to set up in the camp to record for their daily struggles with Bears, Wolves and Cougars lurking about the camp. Contestants each select 10 items of survival gear from a pre-approved list of 40, and are issued a kit of standard equipment, clothing and first aid/emergency supplies. Each given a satellite phone to 'tap' out at any time. Last man standing wins.

I imagine there's quite a disclaimer for them to sign!

That could get expensive though. They are all told that they could end up staying in the woods for a maximum of 1 year. That one year must have something to do with visas I'd expect. Of the 2 seasons I watched it wasn't even close to a year. Honestly though, for me I wouldn't last that long because I do not like to eat fish, simple as that. I don't even eat crab. Now, if there was a way to deep-fry my fish out there that's a different story.

Wow! That's a tough one to do. I presume they have some preparation to cope or screening process. Otherwise, if too many get eaten by wild animals, not a good sell for the show.
I enjoyed one set in Alaska where a couple had built a life for themselves, in the wilderness in their 40s. Now they were late 60s, early 70s and needed to be closer to civilisation. The reality show was about 6 couples (I forget how many) and they each had to impress this couple to take over their home/land once they left. That was tough too. But at least you weren't totally alone.

They whittle it down to about 20 I think who then have to show their survival skillset by accomplishing various tasks in front of survival experts. 10 make the final and are transported to their site which is about 10km from each other. Some of the shelters they create for themselves are quite good. Even make-shift log cabins. Started watching 2 weeks ago with each Season having about 11 episodes, now on Season 5 (Mongolia) which consists of losers from pervious episodes. Suckers for punishment I tell ya.
