Interesting how some of the fans call it the Dave Hill pantomime show with only one original member. I can think of another band like that. Cheers Is a great article going into the falling out's with band members but Dave Hill comes across as the short guy with a big mouth and a nasty streak in him. He has clearly let the fame the brand Slade go to his head kicking out Don. Hill has by his short man ego and noncey vibes made Slade a comedy pantomime show. The fact they can't sit around a table again because of whatever was said the last time they done that. Must of been a soul destroying meeting for Noddy who he seems a likeable chap who has had the most sucessful career since quitting the band Dave is a very sweet guy and the 70s dressing up was a group decision and pushed hard by Chas Chandler. Admittedly Don's sacking was badly handled but like Quo egos and health problems can be a toxic mix.

I still fail to see what you think is "dodgy" about Dave Hill apart from his taste in hats.

railroad007 and curiousgirl make interesting points. Although I've never fallen out with an aggressive nutter. I'm not that daft Francis has only really ever hinted at Alan's aggressive, overly-macho nature; mentioned it in passing as opposed to coming right out with it. As with everything, his perception will be based on all manner of stuff from his early life to the influence of substances and beyond. But one thing has been quite clear for a while; he and Alan were total opposites and had their 'moments' even going back to the 60's. The problem (if you see it as a problem) is that just before and then after Alan left, the music went in a different direction. So the fans - the hardcore ones anyway - see Francis as the villain. That the music would have been all Don't Think It Matters and Over The Edge had Alan remained in the band. Which is clearly nonsense. I only met Alan the once and he was very pleasant and humble. But I haven't spent 20 years with him on a bus or tried to keep it all together when he was 10,000 miles away. Likewise Francis. I suspect both of them would have driven me demented. Take a bow, John Coghlan Its a hell of a lifestyle. I wouldn't thank you for it, even with the money. But it's completely normal for any people to fall out if they've been living cheek to cheek for decades. There's no blame. It's just what happens. A natural process. Slade's situation seems worse than Quo's. Much more acrimonious. But, again, is anyone to blame? You believe the one you want to believe and try to take it from there.

If Alan was a violent nutter, Francis would have said it by now. He has no problem throwing Rick under the bus at times, Alan would be no exception. If Alan had been behind bars, Vienna the exception, it would have came out a long time ago and Francis and Rick would have said it.
Francis and Alan had no trouble throwing mud at each other...Francis would have had no problem mentioning it, especially if it made him look good.

Quite an interesting article that. Probably sums up a lot of bands whose members have known each other for decades and whose stardom suddenly falls off a cliff. Noddy seems to make the most sense but he is probably the richest of them and can afford to be more easy going about things. He's also done other things like TV presenting and doing radio DJ work. I think a full on Slade reunion tour would be very successful and would give at least two of them some half decent income for a while. Remind you of anyone? But it seems its not to be. I think it takes quite a bit to dislike someone who was once a mate. If it happens, it's happened to me, the last thing you want is to go back...fcuk 'em! This is the situation in a lot of bands. Being in a band must be an unbelievable intrusion on your private life, you have no secrets and some funny fcuker might enjoy dropping you right in it with the wife. FR could not stand AL, I reckon "That song" being the issue and the drugs were total bollocks a smokescreen. The song issue was laughable coming from the bloke who wrote Blue For You, it's ridiculous. I think it was probably behaviour that led to a night behind bars, that doesn't sound like an isolated incident totally out of character. It's not fun knocking about with a short tempered violent nutter, it becomes a worry because you're always trying to manage things so a situation does not occur, loads of distraction and stepping in or actually missing out on stuff because you know the 'the nutter' will fcuk it up for you and you could get physically hurt if it's with the wrong people. Ditching a nut is difficult, they don't like it one bit. Distance helps(You can tell I've had to do this). After a reasonable interval, 30 years ought to do it, you may encounter them again and things seem okay and then with a sinking feeling you realise that nothing has changed and you have to disengage again...for good. So it wasn't the shit loads of alcohol and drugs that Francis and Rick were taking, that both admitted to and confessed that contributed to the downfall, the musical confrontations between Alan and Francis, both Francis and Alan's personalities clashing, Alan living in Australia, John admitting he was burned out and couldn't hack it anymore, Francis allegedly being a complete dick during the B2B sessions and Bob Young being isolated and struck off by management and Francis... It was Alan being a violent nutter, who was put behind bars one night, which happened again 30 years later?

Gotta say, reading all these posts an' all, it seems that the closest thing/person to sane [apart from Bob] was, curiously enough, 'The Mad Turk'. Yep, take a bow JC 👍

these rather speculative thoughts could be spot on, for all we know. on the other hand, they could be completely wide of the mark. maybe even pretty much the opposite of the actual situation, again - for all we know. Den, you support Everton so you opinion is worthless until you can produce 2 wins and a draw in the next four games. Sorry Den but life's cruel that way.
