Was this track written specifically for Quo or was it a cover version?

With the success of ITAN, was someone scouring Dutch songwriters for material?
It was a single in..... France, i think?

Was this track written specifically for Quo or was it a cover version? Read somewhere that it was people at the Record Company who wanted Quo to record it. That could be speculative and hearsay so wouldn't take it as fact

I’ve always liked this. I know I know…. Bigger production and another singer doing it (sorry, Francis) and it could have been big. I like it too, FWIW

I remember reading that after the success of ITAN the Dutch brothers Ferdi & Rob Bolland (who wrote ITAN) stated they would like to write more songs for Quo. Don't know if this was simply their wish, or a request from Quo. Might well be that ITAN inspired Quo to look for other material from Dutch songwriters.
Fluitsma and Van Tijn met in 1980, both playing in the same (obscure) band in Amsterdam. In 1985 they starting writing for and producing songs for other, mainly Dutch, artists. They were quite successful.
In 1996 they were asked to write a song for a TV commercial for a Dutch financial institution. They sang it themselves. The song, '15 miljoen mensen' (15 million people, a reference to the total population of The Netherlands at the time) became so popular that the song was released as a single and became a number one hit for them in The Netherlands. Here's that song, with English subtitles:

If this song had been done by Bryan Adams, phil collins or Rod Stewart or one of those 80s euro pop bands it could have been a massive hit. Quo do a Good version but a little too off the wall. They released similar in Who Gets the love and that wasn’t really successful.

One of Quo's better slow/ballady efforts. It was my favourite track on the album for a while, although that probably says more about the album than the song itself It was a single release somewhere, as gav says, but I can't remember where either. As for the writing, who knows how it all panned out in the late 80's? The band were drugged up to the hilt (or certainly two of them were) and probably just did as they were told. Or, rather, advised. They probably can't remember themselves.

This song is everything but not Status Quo. Unbelieveable that they have released stuff like these.

This song is everything but not Status Quo. Unbelieveable that they have released stuff like these. The inevitable comparison is ZZ Top. The brought out the 'modern' sounding Eliminator to huge success and of course Quo took note (Red Sky). However, while Eliminator felt organic and an evolution of their sound, Quo were more throwing 80's stuff against a wall and seeing what stuck, trying to play what they felt people wanted to hear or would be a 'hit' instead of sticking with, and modernising, what they were good at. *Pretentious muso mode off.*

I had a listen to this song again... I never liked and still think is average and dull... but well, my favorites from the album are Dont Mind if I do and Everytime I think of you, Magic as well, which many will consider even worse songs. Not really a good Quo album!

I actually don’t think ain’t complaining is that close to the bottom of the barrel. It’s for a pretty positive vibe. Poppy yes butprettt good melodies and production for 1988.
Certainly prefer this to the Heat album
A remix removing the parpy keyboards would go a way to improving the source material

Never liked it. Always was a skiper until 3 or 4 years. Still don't like it, but I leave it, maybe I go to the bathroom or the kitchen when the song is still playing.
IIRC, the song wasn't on the original tracklist of The Fighter, wasn't it?
