I can't find it, but some time back we had a crazy thread about "what is a shuffle". It went over most of our heads Found another one here that is easier to understandFrom the descriptions of the different styles of shuffle, I understand from the thread that Quo do a "flat tyre" shuffle, ie equal emphases on each beat.

It goes like this.
- Someone asks a question about musical theory - Someone who knows about musical theory answers. In the theoretical manner appropriate for the question - Someone who doesn’t know or care about music theory calls it “bollocks” - things escalate
I’m keeping out of it this time

I just shared the thread as it helped me get it. Figured out that the "flat tyre" shuffle is what I like best in music and probably is why I love Quo so much. Been listening to Robert Johnson, whose flat tyre shuffle recordings from 1938 sound great! 👍

Simplified: A shuffle is based on note triplets (1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 etc), a straight rhythm is based on note doubles (1-2, 1-2, 1-2 etc). Shuffle #1 (and you can very clearly hear Dennis Dunaway hammering the triplets on bass from 00:11 to 00:19 to great dramatic effect): Same song straight: Shuffle #2: Same song straight: Straight up to 05:24, shuffle thereafter, straight resumed at 06:42, switch to very fast shuffle at 08:36 until the very end: Straight in the verses and chorus, fast shuffle during Blackmore's solo starting from 03:58, return to straight at 05:40: Straight in the verses and chorus, gentle shuffle starts at 03:13 (after Sweet have heard too much Tubular Bells ), shuffle in full swing at 04:24, straight eights resume at 05:03: Finally, can there be a more gratifying experience than covertly slipping a UK prog rock (prettiest prog group ever!) track into a Quo-oh-oh-oh-oh forum of all places? Shuffle during intro up to 00:15, then straight, shuffle returns with violin solo at 01:50, return to straight at 02:33: Does that help a little? My work is done here.

It all looks very interesting, but it's completely over my head. So it's back to matt's theorem:
It's all bollocks.

Deep purple are a band I know nothing about. Thanks I’m going to check them out on the strength of this Any starting points for me? You're pulling my leg, Matt, right? A Quonut oblivious of Deep Purple? Yet your wish is my command, fasten seatbelt, I'm gonna race you to the grou-ound !!!
WHAT EVERYONE WILL TELL YOU:
- In Rock 1970 (sort of DP's 'Quo', the album)
- Made In Japan 1972/73 (widely regarded as the early 70ies live album that started the live album craze and sans any touch-ups)
- Perfect Strangers 1984 (after the reunion)
THE CLASSIC MK II LINE-UP AT ITS SONGWRITING, INSTRUMENTAL AND PRODUCTION PEAK:
IF YOU'RE THE SORT OF PERSON WHO LIKES TO HEAR MORE THAN ONE GUY SINGING:
LIFE AFTER RITCHIE (yes, there was one!):
LATE CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Purpendicular 1996
- Now What?! 2013
- Whoosh! 2020
Maybe it's just me, but I always found it hard to fathom that you could like either one of the two bands, but not the other. There are differences of course: - Quo had (in any era) always a higher pop content than Purple, they were and are catchier, Purple's (few) single hits are all accidents, Hush (not penned by the band) excepted. A catchy chorus was never the be- and end-all of their songwriting.
- What Rick Parfitt's rhythm guitar is to Quo, Jon Lord's/Don Airey's Hammond organ is to DP - the steaming engine room and the sound halo.
- Purple's shtick has always been "Yes, we play heavy rock, but we're real virtuosos at it, watch for our lengthy solos!"
- Just like Quo has an English/Celtic folk ingredient to its essentially Blues-based boogie, Purple spices up its same prime influence with classical music ingredients - lots of minor key tunes and runs in contrast to Quo's lots of major key tunes though.
- Alas!, Deep Purple smash and blow up things on purpose ...
And for what it's worth: The bass on Quo's Wild Side Of Life is played by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover (also the producer of that track) who to that end very much emulated Nuff's bass style (who in return would always play Roger's lines faithfully live). And Rossi is on record for saying that the only heavy rock/metal he really likes is Blackmore's Rainbow (a DP split-off). (Roger Glover offers his heartfelt apologies today for the inane lyrics he wrote in 1979 - and you guys dare worry about The Oriental!)
