Rick bought it with white paint on. Wouldn't have had time to paint it, as they were in the midst of a tour (early '74)

It doesn't sound like something that Rick would have done somehow. He would surely have mentioned it the way that Rossi has dined out on tales of green furniture paint.
Fender possibly used various primers on early teles and strats or even started a batch of paintwork jobs to only then change the main colour depending on paint supplies at the time or customer requests. Some sunburst finishes were sometimes botched and then another main colour sprayed over the top. Fender probably got up to all sorts of stuff in the painting department. Though still a possibility that a previous owner did a re-spray before Rick got his hands on it.

Was surprised to read that Rick painted his tele himself, and that his blue primer can be seen in the worn parts. It looks very professionally done,in the 70's it looked new and factory produced. Nobody could accuse Francis of doing a professional job with his! Learn something every day! If it's true, I have never heard about Rick wielding a paintbrush before except when he and the band including Bernie and Lynton joined forces to give Rick's manor a lick of paint... ... followed, no doubt, by a good polish!!! 🙄
