Just watched Quo'd very good 1½ set from my local band. The full Hello album and in order, the album version of Mystery Song and a 15 sec version of Margarita Time in the Medley. That's 15 seconds too long in my opinion. Anyway by accounts the JCQ set was not up to the usual high standard. That's a pity, as you would have thought he would like to have gone out with a bang. But at least we all have our fond memories of him when he was part of the best hard rock band in Europe! I have not been to a Quo convention, maybe if there is one next year, I hope to go. If there is, it will probably be September 2024

It was a fabulous weekend! So many brilliant bands and it was so great to be back with the Quo family again. My personal highlights were DOTH, BFM and Baz Barry but every band had their moment! I love that there are young people out there wanting to play Quo. Heavy Traffic are so talented! And I love watching how Baz’s youngsters really feel the music, his son on drums, the bass player and Jay on guitar really get into it! John’s set was different to past shows but I think most of the fans were there to support him and JCQ on their farewell gig. Respect to John for being part of the number one rock and roll band in the land. Not sure if I can share it here but the great Quo fan Werner did an excellent report on FB….

Yep, looks really great - I’m wondering who’s who as well?! 3 SQ drummers, a nice touch imho, don’t recognise anyone else tho’ (sorry!) Btw, where does that version of 4500x come from - seems a bit faster than ‘normal’!?

Out of interest what about Johns set was underwhelming? And how was it different? Part of it was the fact that he was only on the drums for half of it. For the first part he was on "congas" which you could not really hear. Then he left the stage for four items, then came back on and played the drums. No disrespect to Adrian Johnson on the drums, I just felt that there should have been more from John. Plus the fact that a lot of the stuff played by JCQ had already been played by other bands, just a lot faster and harder, so it was really obvious that JCQ version was a lot slower. I've heard people comment on the speed before and haven't really worried about it, but it was so noticeable this time as we could compare with other bands. For me, the best band was Heavy Traffic. Especially the Sunday night performance when they substituted for Sounds of Status. The band was slightly augmented by Brino, and two of the Sounds of Status band, the other two had been refused entry to the UK by border force (I'm sure most have seen the posts on Facebook about this). But all the bands were really good.

I can't resist posting, even though I wasn't there. I saw JCQ play in July in Putney this summer. And yes, he does take breaks from the set. But the man is 76. And he tires more easily. I find it strange that those of you disappointed in him can't see that. Oh well, glad we're all different. What I've noticed, watching my elders age, is if they are in good health, they keep going without much sign of ageing but then, it's as if the body says, I've had enough, I need to slow down. And they age more rapidly. Once I got back into Quo after not seeing them since '84, I've followed John and JCQ since 2013. And I see this change in him this year. Yep, he was slowing a bit anyway and now he really needs to slow down. Hence the altered set.

I was surprised that JCQ didn't perform the 2 tracks the band wrote during Lockdown at Putney and Butlins
