Edmond 'Eddy' Grant was born in Guyana on 5th March 1948 and is 75 today. He moved to London in 1960 and five years later founded The Equals, their big hit in 1968 being 'Baby, Come Back'. Grant was injured in a car crash the following year and gave up touring but continued to write songs for the band. He stayed in the music industry and has released 15 solo albums since 1975 together with 6 top 20 singles, including this one from 1988.
p.s. Only realized years later that Jo'anna was in fact Johannesburg and that the song was about apartheid. So much for listening to lyrics when you're grooving on the dancefloor!!
Twins Charlie & Craig Reid were born in Edinburgh on this day in 1962 and so celebrate their joint 61st birthday today. They formed The Proclaimers in 1983 and achieved success in 1988 with their second album 'Sunshine on Leith'. Since then they have released a dozen albums but have never bettered this 1988 hit in worldwide popularity.
p.s. By the way, maybe Mortified or Cammy can advise us non-Scots what 'haver' and 'havering' is? Asking for a friend!

The single I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) was actually banned from some radios stations in America because they thought "haver" was sensitive content It actually just means to talk rubbish or blether (is blether a Scottish word? Not sure). This example of Parliamo Scozia gives you an idea: Bob said " Scotland are the best side in the world" Hamish replied " Ach, yer haverin', man" Ahem, anyway; moving on. The Proclaimers are massive up here. They never play to anything other than sold out halls and the occasional arena (and festival as you can see). But I appreciate they are an acquired taste I like them. Not all of their stuff but a good proportion of it. They're terrific live. Funnily enough, Mrs Mortified and I usually stick a playlist on of a weekend when pottering in the kitchen and I try to keep it sort of 80's-ish for her because that's what she's more familiar with and last night Eddy Grant's I Don't Wanna Dance came on. Hadn't heard it in decades! I think we need to see a picture of you, quodec , "grooving on the dancefloor". Gimme hope

Micky Jupp, born in Sussex on 6th March 1944, is 79 today. Happy birthday Micky! Here is a live clip of him on French TV in 1982, with a Chuck cover and two of his own.(is that Antoine DeCoen? of Eurotrash fame on the intro?).

Gareth Michael 'Gaz' Coombes was born in Oxford on 8th March 1976 and is 47 today. He helped form Supergrass in 1993, who went on to have nine Top 10 singles throughout the 90s, and should be included in that whole Britpop era - but unfortunately usually arn't. This is one of their later hits, from 1999. Cracking video too, remember seeing it at the time and thought the CGI was amazing!
Gary Webb was born in London on this day in 1958 and therefore is celebrating his 65 birthday. He founded Tubeway Army in 1977, who were initially punk but changed quickly to early purveyors of synth pop/rock. TA had that huge hit in 1979 with Are Friends Electric? and then Numan went solo and released Cars in the same year, with the bulk of Tubeway as his musicians. You would want to have been around in '79 to see the impact Numan had on rock music. I was into New Wave and heavy rock at the time and from nowhere this guy come on TOTP and it sounded so alien and yet so catchy. I never really took to synth pop but Numan certainly changed the landscape for the New romantics et al that followed. He continues to record and gig regularly, so rather than play one of his No. 1's, I've gone for this 2002 single, which I really like.

Mickey Jupp is one of those artists I once heard a single of on the radio and bought it. But that was about it. It was called Don't Talk To Me and was from 1980 or thereabouts. I actually started playing it again when I replaced all my singles with mp3's using one of those converter turntable thingies and ended up grabbing the album, Oxford. Almost 40 years after the fact! Better late than never Supergrass were OK. I only own one album - In It For The Money - but I've never been mad keen on it. I always associated them with Britpop as well. Mid 90's British guitar band. Certainly as Britpop as Pulp I'd have thought. Ah, Gary Numan. Now you're talking. His was the last gig I was at other than Quo. Back in 2017 at Newcastle City Hall. It was truly superb. I always quite liked him even during the Are Friends Electric days. I even saw him once in the 80's. But he then brought out a single not that long after called We Are Glass and the guitars had moved in From about 1993 onwards with the album Sacrifice, he's been even more influential than he was when he first started out. Nine Inch Nails pretty much exist because of him. Never really given the credit he deserves in my opinion and still best known for Cars, which he didn't even play when I saw him. Bordering on genius for me. And he could shake up Top of the Pops now and then This performance with Rico is superb.

Tom Scholz, founder and main man with the band Boston, was born in that city on 10th March 1947 and is 76 today. He founded the band in 1975 and self-produced the eponymous album and released it the following year. 'More than a Feeling' was the big hit from it, but I'm going to pick a track 'Party' from the follow-up LP 'Don't Look Back'. It was on some compilation I had and always enjoyed the good-time boogie groove to it. Scholtz is the one with the white Gibson at stage left.

I remember Boston well. They were big in the UK for about 20 minutes I actually went to see them in Edinburgh in 1979. Not sure why. I bought their first album on the strength of the single but wasn't mad on it. A bit too AOR for me. But I used to go see anyone and everyone in those days. The gig was OK as I recall. That track isn't bad though. If you ignore the " does anyone want to party out there tonight?" bog standard rock rhetoric

Multi-instrumentalist, Mechanical engineer, environmentalist and inventor of the Rockman and other music related things - and a cool dude to boot! Love the 1st 3 Boston albums, most of what’s come after is poor though. I got ‘Life Love and Hope’ brand new (unopened) in a bargain bin for €3 - possibly the worst album I’ve ever heard, I was f*#kin’ ripped off!!🤬

Blur guitarist and songwriter Graham Coxon was born in Germany on 12th March 1969 and is 54 today. He helped form Blur in 1988 and contributed to all eight studio albums they released, six of which went to No. 1.
'Song 2' is from their eponymous fifth album and is supposedly a joke/parody but quickly became one of their most successful live tracks.

I was never that into Blur. Bits and pieces. But I did grab a Graham Coxon solo album a good few years ago called The Spinning Top because I heard a track called In The Morning which I'd liked. Not a bad album actually. I think Song 2 is probably Blur's most well known track for those who don't really like Blur

Mike Love, singer songwriter with The Beach Boys since their early 60s inception, turns 82 today. This is a song he and his cousin Brian Wilson wrote for the band and released as a single in 1968, with Mike on lead vocals. I like it.
